- If it's true that all work and no play makes Jack a
- dull boy (or Jill a dull girl), then Jack and Jill
- owe themselves a trip to GEnie's IBM-compatible
- Computing RoundTables. Veritable treasure troves
- for the computer game enthusiast, the Software
- Libraries are loaded with the latest popular
- shareware and public domain game and entertainment
- programs, and the Bulletin Boards and Real-Time
- Conferences are terrific places to share tips and
- information on your favorites. From logic and word
- games to graphic adventures, from playing card
- offerings to full-blown multimedia arcade games,
- there's fun for every taste waiting in GEnie's
- IBM-compatible Computing RoundTables.
-
- IBM PC RoundTable
-
- Starting in the IBM PC RoundTable (GEnie Page 615
- or type the keyword IBMPC to move there online),
- LetterSlide (File 35391 LSLIDE.ZIP) is a
- word/puzzle game based loosely on Sokoban. Each
- puzzle screen contains a number of letter blocks
- which you push left, right, up, or down. You may
- not push blocks diagonally. Your job is to push
- these blocks so that they form words at least three
- letters long, displayed vertically or horizontally,
- backwards or forwards. By creating words you are
- able to collect jewels and advance to the next
- level. As an aid, you can also collect bombs that
- allow you to destroy any block. That's all there is
- to it. Sound simple? You'll find it quite
- challenging! The game comes with a 16,000+ word
- dictionary and an editor so you can create your own
- levels.
-
- Another word game, File 35285 WORDY.ZIP, is the
- latest, much-improved version of an educational
- game which works on both mono and color systems.
- Wordy checks entered words "on the fly" against a
- 94,000 word dictionary. The game is optimized for
- practicing pattern and word recognition skills used
- in Scrabble(tm) and Boggle(tm).
-
- In Dungeons of Drakklor, you become Binkley, the
- bravest explorer of all time, where you begin the
- most dangerous campaign of all, the search for the
- fountain of life. Legend has it that the fountain
- is located in the lost fire-city of Arrythrias.
- Your quest will not be easy. Arrythrias lies in the
- outer reaches of the Drakklor Mountains, where
- unspeakably evil creatures lurk, waiting for unwary
- explorers. Dungeons of Drakklor is File 35436
- DRAK41A.ZIP.
-
- You are the great space adventurer, George P.
- Shagnasty in Skulas (File 35437 SKUL01A.ZIP) and
- you've landed on the planet Skulas looking for a
- cool drink. There are 20 levels, each with a
- multitude of traps, treasures, spells, and
- creatures. Game play can be saved and restored.
-
- For a different type of role-playing game, try
- AMERICHAOS 1994 (File 35434 AC9401A.ZIP), in which
- bands of genetically-altered motorcycle bandits
- tough enough to shrug off shotgun blasts prowl
- ruined cities. Armored city fortresses house the
- rich and powerful, while the rest of us face daily
- fights for survival. A complete hypertext role
- playing rule book, the game itself is not played on
- the computer. It is designed to be used as a
- hypertext set of rules for playing the game with
- friends.
-
- Windows RoundTable
-
- For games designed designed to be played in the
- Windows environment, move to the Windows RoundTable
- at GEnie page 1335 (keyword WINDOWS). One recent
- addition to the Windows Software Library is MedWar
- (File 2238 MEDWAR12.ZIP), a medieval war/strategy
- game for up to six human or computer players.
- MedWar's many options include an editable playing
- map, variable victory conditions, 14 different
- playing pieces and 24 strength levels.
-
- Windows File 2303 OPALANIM.ZIP is a graphic sliding
- puzzle game that uses pictures of animals
- representing each letter of the alphabet. It's
- educational and ideal for young children. Files
- 2309 and 2312, NT_BOG.ZIP and NT_HANG.ZIP
- respectively, are versions of the old favorites,
- Bog (a word game similiar to Boggle) and Hangman
- written for Windows NT.
-
- Finally, if your tastes in recreation take you
- outdoors to the golf course, try Golf League
- Recorder (File 2320 GOLFLR.ZIP) for tracking your
- personal performance and league handicapping
- statistics. Golf League Recorder features an
- attractive 3-D look and is easy to use. Up to 100
- players are supported per file. Educational
- information is provided for those interested in
- learning handicapping methods. Graphs can be
- generated to display handicap trends and personal
- scoring results, and handicaps can be viewed and
- sorted in a number of ways.
-
- OS/2 RoundTable
-
- If you've moved to the OS/2 operating system, move
- to GEnie's OS/2 RoundTable (Page 1400, keyword
- OS/2) to sample some of the games in that Software
- Library. File 2477 FMCRDS.ZIP includes seven
- different Solitaire card games for OS/2, while
- Numbers (File 2577 NUMBERS.ZIP) is a deceptively
- difficult Presentation Manager-based game of
- numerical logic and skill.
-
- OS/2 RoundTable sysop Jeff Elkins created 26 new
- Mahjongg games for OS/2 to satisfy his wife's
- gaming urges. Now you can try them, too, in File
- 2471 NEWMAH1.ZIP. If, like many people, you're
- still running your favorite DOS-based games under
- OS/2, download File 2550 GAMEOS2.ZIP, a file
- containing all the information you need to optimize
- their settings and performance.
-
- For online gaming, OS/2-style, drop by the OS/2
- RoundTable Real-Time Conference on Thursday nights
- beginning at 9:30 PM Eastern time. That's OS/2 Game
- Night, hosted by sysop Kimberly Bobrow. The OS/2
- Real-Time Conference is at GEnie Page 1400, Menu
- Item 2.
-
- Cyberspace/Multimedia RoundTable
-
- Stashed over in the Cyberspace Software Library on
- Page 2000 (keyword CYBERSPACE) are a number of
- Virtual Reality games and demonstration programs of
- interest. In The Menace of Dr. Spoil Sport (File 12
- MODSS.LZH) you'll enjoy a colorful 3-D shoot-em-up
- game in which you must find a hidden space station
- and disable the evil doctor's super laser beams to
- save earth. If you prefer hunting dragons, try File
- 849 DRAGHUNT.ZIP, a 3-D simulation of reality, in
- this case a fantasy.
-
- Speaking of simulations, there's a great one in
- GRANDCAN.ZIP (File 395), a 3-D wire-frame flight
- through one of the world's natural wonders, the
- Grand Canyon. View it through your own red/blue
- glasses, or turn off stereo mode and zoom over,
- around, and down inside some of the most daunting
- canyons on earth. Control the flight yourself or
- select auto-flight mode.
-
- In MOVER3.ZIP (File 848) you can explore a
- three-dimensional world by hand or by riding on a
- moving 3-D cart, where you can stop, start, and
- activate other 3-D objects (some of which are also
- moving), and explore behind walls to find entrances
- to secret areas. Tip: find the helicopter.
-
- BBS & Telecommunications RoundTable
-
- If you run a Bulletin Board System (BBS), GEnie's
- BBS & Telecommunications RoundTable at Page 610
- (keyword BBS) is the place to find those great game
- doors you need to keep your callers coming back for
- more. In Rise to Power (File 6385 RTP190A.ZIP),
- players navigate a map of medieval Germany, attack
- wayward brigands and other players, and perform
- quests for the king, all while plotting to seize
- the throne for themselves. Rise to Power supports
- most BBSs, including PCBoard, Wildcat!, WWIV,
- Spitfire and Quick BBS.
-
- File 6355 OTH301.ZIP in the BBS Software Library is
- a version of the classic board game, Othello,
- ported to a BBS door game. It's easy to install and
- supports any BBS. T&J Video Poker (File 6495
- TJPOKE16.ZIP) is network-ready, features listings
- of top ten scores, all-time high scores, last
- week's high, and a sysop-configurable bonus.
-
- As you can see, whether you're running the latest
- Pentium powerhouse or chugging along on your
- father's old XT, GEnie's IBM-compatible Computing
- RoundTables have plenty to offer in the way of
- entertaining game software. Don't be dull like Jack
- and Jill -- check out your favorite computing
- RoundTables today.
