- Is there need for censorship in the arts? Do artists have a responsibility
- to their audience? What should or shouldn't be censored? Violence? Sexual
- content? Political expression? Should we maintain different standards for
- works intended for children? Do different standards apply in different parts
- of the country, and who determines these standards?
-
- Throughout the month of June, GEnie's arts and literature-related
- RoundTables are joining forces to present a series of Real-Time Conferences
- and special events discussing censorship and related issues. Details are
- still being completed at press time, but the month-long symposium will be
- sandwiched between two conferences, on June 1st and on June 30th, in the
- National Real-Time Conference at GEnie Page 500 (keyword RTC). In the month
- between these two conferences, the participating RoundTables, which include
- Writers, Comics, the Science Fiction and Fantasy RoundTables, ShowBiz,
- Romance, and Music, as well as the Law RoundTable, will feature special
- guests, panel discussions and interactive conferences discussing topics
- dealing with censorship in their particular area of focus.
-
- You'll hear from authors, artists, musicians, and others whose work has been
- censored. Talk with librarians and publishers who have had to make difficult
- decisions regarding controversial works. And you'll have an opportunity to
- share your views and ideas with these guests and with fellow GEnie members.
- It promises to be an exciting and thought-provoking month.
-
- Below is a sampling of events scheduled at press time. Many of the following
- are events co-sponsored by more than one of the partcipating RoundTables.
