- Spring cleaning! Ah, yes, the time of year that conjures images of moving
- furniture, dusting things, getting out summer clothes, and... and...
-
- AhCHOOOOOOOOOOOO!
-
- Excuse me. Ahem. Now where was I? Oh, yes, spring also brings up... pardon
- me while I get a tissue.
-
- Looks like I need to learn about allergies if I'm going to get any work
- done. Sounds like a job for the Knowbot! So it's off to the Dialog ARTIST
- system on GEnie, specifically the Consumer Medicine database, which is
- >>>HALF PRICE<<< during the entire month of May! Enter the keyword MEDICINE
- or M1258 at any GEnie prompt to get there.
-
- Strong Medicine
-
- As the ARTISans describe it, "Consumer Medicine gives you just the most
- important medical articles, those about treating people. Plus, every
- article has an informative abstract! Find the latest research, get the case
- studies, read the controversial opinion pieces."
-
- Indeed, more than 3 million articles are summarized there on all aspects of
- human medicine. You enter the topic -- whether a specific ailment, drug, or
- medical procedure -- to get the latest medical research information.
-
- Consumer Medicine accesses the U.S. National Library of Medicine MEDLINE(R)
- database made available by Dialog Information Services, Inc. It is offered
- through GEnie via Advanced Research Technologies' ARTIST(R) Gateway System.
-
- As in most of the ARTIST systems, the Knowbot will present you with a list
- of titles after you enter the search terms. You can then select the
- articles for which you want to see the full text.
-
- Consumer Medicine is a GEnie$Premium service. Additional charges apply to
- search and retrieval. Be sure to select Item 2 on Page 1258 and review the
- complete listing of applicable prices.
-
- If you have never tried one of the ARTIST systems on GEnie, you'll be
- interested to know that Consumer Medicine has a Training Area where you can
- get acquainted with the Knowbot for a lower fee. There, you can conduct
- searches on a smaller version of the real service. The Training Area for
- Consumer Medicine comprises only a few of the titles available from the
- main service, so don't be discouraged if the information you're looking for
- doesn't turn up there.

- On second thought, the word ALLERGIES is probably too general and will give
- me too many "hits" -- in other words, more records than I want. I need to
- narrow the search down, so I'll choose option 1 again.

-
- Hi, I am a Knowbot... your computerized online librarian. My job is to
- help you find information on your topic. While you're reading this, I'm
- already working on my first step -- checking over 3 million medical
- articles in my collection to find the ones that match your topic. Here
- we go!
-
- You will first see up to 10 titles of the articles that match your
- search. These will be the most current articles on your topic. You can
- select from the list of titles and I'll get the full record that is
- available. In my collection, I have a brief abstract of the original
- article and the full bibliographic information if you need to track
- down the full article.
-
- You can always come back to the list of titles and select other full
- records... or see more titles.
-
- I'm looking for the information...
-
- I'm still looking...
- (It periodically lets you know what it's doing, so you don't think it
- died.)
-
- Ah! Here come the results:
-

- I will display the first 10 record(s) now.

-
- There are several allergic responses that may occur in susceptible
- individuals as a result of exposure to physical stimuli. Most of these
- conditions are mediated by vasoactive substances and usually result in
- symptoms of urticaria and/or angioedema. There are 2 such conditions
- that may occur as a direct result from exercise. The first of these is
- cholinergic urticaria....
-
- And there's lots more where that came from!
-
- When I've seen all the articles I want, I exit the system and the Knowbot
- tells me how much I spent -- not including standard GEnie connect time
- charges. And remember: During the entire month of May 1994, searches in the
- Consumer Medicine database are HALF of their usual price!
-
- Now I have some idea how to treat allergies. And when I visit my doctor,
- I'll know what he's talking about -- and he'll KNOW I know it too, thanks
- to GEnie.
