  1. It's a fine, Spring Saturday morning and the birds
  2. are chirping. You wish they'd hush because you'd
  3. like to stay snuggled in your bunk and snooze a bit
  4. longer. Instead, you start thinking of all the
  5. things that must be done today. For starters, you
  6. have folks coming for dinner and the place is a
  7. mess. There are errands to run and Spring spruce-up
  8. projects to start -- and you haven't the slightest
  9. idea where to begin! You turn over and concentrate
  10. on making your brain forget about functioning.
  11.   
  12. But the cat has different ideas. It's impossible to
  13. sleep with it sitting on you insisting that feeding
  14. time is right "n-e-o-o-w-w!" You sniff and realize
  15. that the cat stinks; as you hear the clatter of
  16. canine paws, there's just enough time to tense when
  17. -- "thwump!" -- the dog's full weight lands on the
  18. bed. With a quick snap the frame breaks and you all
  19. tumble onto the floor! Slowly you stand and look
  20. around. What in the world are you going to do with
  21. this mess?
  22.   
  23. Cavalry on the Horizon
  24.   
  25. "GEnie!" you shout! Flipping on the computer, you
  26. stagger to the kitchen and shove a cup in the
  27. microwave. The machine whirs as you contemplate the
  28. mess around you while the cat meows and the dog
  29. prances at the door, begging to be let outside.
  30.   
  31. And then you begin to smile. Help is just a GEnie
  32. log-on away.
  33.   
  34. The coffee tastes great. Sitting down at the
  35. keyboard, you ponder all the things you must do to
  36. spruce up the place before company arrives. You
  37. need to fix the bed, clean the house, and see if
  38. there's anything you can do outside. The cat smells
  39. and, glancing out the window, you see that the dog
  40. is rolling in the only muddy spot on the lawn.
  41. There are pits on the aluminum wheels of your car,
  42. you need to shop for dinner and you haven't the
  43. slightest idea what to fix. 
  44.   
  45. First things first, you decide, and head for the
  46. Home Improvement RoundTable to bring up the
  47. Category list. "What to Do When the Bed Falls
  48. Apart" isn't listed, but the Woodworking Category
  49. looks promising. Before you move there you decide
  50. to take a look at the Tip of the Week, and a
  51. message from G.MCCAUSEY1 [Ginger] catches your eye:

  53.   In case you have a screw or bolt that is so tight
  54.   you can't turn it, you can grasp the handle of
  55.   the screwdriver with an adjustable wrench, a box
  56.   wrench, or a pair of pliers and turn the
  57.   screwdriver that way, for MUCH greater torque. At
  58.   the same time, use your other hand to press down
  59.   hard on the end of the screwdriver so that it
  60.   won't come out of the slot in the head of the
  61.   screw.
  62.   
  63. "Neat idea!" you think as you start capturing
  64. messages in the Woodworking Category. While GEnie
  65. works, you can start cleaning the hopeless mess
  66. that is your kitchen.
  67.   
  68. Deciding there has to be an easier way, you move to
  69. GEnie's Family and Personal Growth RoundTable. Home
  70. Management, Organization and Finance seems a likely
  71. place for tips to help you spruce up the house.
  72. "Sidetracked Home Executives -- S.H.E" looks
  73. interesting since there's no doubt that you get
  74. sidetracked every time you try to get organized.
  75.   
  76. You're not quite sure whether to believe what
  77. T.MORINAGA [terrie] writes:

  79.   I have a book on speed cleaning by Jeff Campbell
  80.   and the Clean Team. Although I do like the SHE
  81.   system, this book gives some good cleaning ideas
  82.   and shortcuts. It deals with weekly cleaning, and
  83.   says an average house cleaned by a three-person
  84.   team takes them 45 minutes.
  85.   
  86. You decide to call your friends and ask them to
  87. come over early. With all the hints you're finding
  88. on GEnie, surely they'll help clean house while you
  89. make dinner.

  91. With company coming early, you figure you'd better
  92. start thinking about what you're going to feed
  93. them. You move to the Food and Wine RoundTable.
  94. Hunger pains attack as you look through all the
  95. wonderful recipes. Today you want to make something
  96. quick and easy. You'd also like it spicy, and the
  97. Tex-Mex recipe topic looks inviting.

  99. As you look through the recipes, you're suddenly
  100. glad messages on GEnie don't scroll off after a few
  101. weeks -- the ideal meal for tonight was posted by
  102. D.FLINT4 [David-Albuq.] in 1991:

  104.   Barry Goldwater's Arizona Chili
  105.   
  106.         1 lb. ground beef
  107.         4 tbls. peanut oil or corn oil
  108.         1 lb. canned pinto beans
  109.         1 6-oz. can tomato puree
  110.         2 cups chopped onion
  111.         3 tbls. chili powder
  112.         1 tbls. cumin
  113.         1/2 tsp. salt
  114.         1/2 cup water
  115.   
  116.   In large skillet, brown beef in oil. Remove meat
  117.   and drain off excess grease. Add pinto beans,
  118.   tomato puree and onion and saute for about two
  119.   minutes. Mix chili powder, cumin and salt into
  120.   water and pour into skillet. Bring to a boil, add
  121.   meat, lower to a simmer and cook for about 20
  122.   minutes. Serves six.

  124. "Wish you could cook as well as you can recipe,
  125. GEnie," you say as you take a peek at California
  126. Style recipes and spot one from Sylvia Mease,
  127. COOKIE.LADY:

  129.   Banana Rumaki
  130.   
  131.   8 to 10 bacon slices, cut in half 5 bananas,
  132.   slightly underripe 1/2 cup brown sugar 1
  133.   Tablespoon curry powder
  134.   
  135.   Blanch bacon in boiling water for 10 minutes.
  136.   Drain and dry thoroughly. Cut bananas into 1 1/2
  137.   inch chunks and wrap in bacon, securing it closed
  138.   with a toothpick. Combine brown sugar and curry
  139.   powder and sprinkle on wrapped bananas. Bake on
  140.   rack for about 10 minutes at 350 degrees until
  141.   bacon is crisp and sugar is slightly caramelized.

  143. With dinner planned, it's time to do something
  144. about that stinky cat and dog! The PET-NET

  146. about bathing a cat. Indeed, there is a topic on
  147. that very subject! You start reading and soon you
  148. can't help laughing over a conversation on cat
