- It's a fine, Spring Saturday morning and the birds
- are chirping. You wish they'd hush because you'd
- like to stay snuggled in your bunk and snooze a bit
- longer. Instead, you start thinking of all the
- things that must be done today. For starters, you
- have folks coming for dinner and the place is a
- mess. There are errands to run and Spring spruce-up
- projects to start -- and you haven't the slightest
- idea where to begin! You turn over and concentrate
- on making your brain forget about functioning.
-
- But the cat has different ideas. It's impossible to
- sleep with it sitting on you insisting that feeding
- time is right "n-e-o-o-w-w!" You sniff and realize
- that the cat stinks; as you hear the clatter of
- canine paws, there's just enough time to tense when
- -- "thwump!" -- the dog's full weight lands on the
- bed. With a quick snap the frame breaks and you all
- tumble onto the floor! Slowly you stand and look
- around. What in the world are you going to do with
- this mess?
-
- Cavalry on the Horizon
-
- "GEnie!" you shout! Flipping on the computer, you
- stagger to the kitchen and shove a cup in the
- microwave. The machine whirs as you contemplate the
- mess around you while the cat meows and the dog
- prances at the door, begging to be let outside.
-
- And then you begin to smile. Help is just a GEnie
- log-on away.
-
- The coffee tastes great. Sitting down at the
- keyboard, you ponder all the things you must do to
- spruce up the place before company arrives. You
- need to fix the bed, clean the house, and see if
- there's anything you can do outside. The cat smells
- and, glancing out the window, you see that the dog
- is rolling in the only muddy spot on the lawn.
- There are pits on the aluminum wheels of your car,
- you need to shop for dinner and you haven't the
- slightest idea what to fix.
-
- First things first, you decide, and head for the
- Home Improvement RoundTable to bring up the
- Category list. "What to Do When the Bed Falls
- Apart" isn't listed, but the Woodworking Category
- looks promising. Before you move there you decide
- to take a look at the Tip of the Week, and a
- message from G.MCCAUSEY1 [Ginger] catches your eye:
-
- In case you have a screw or bolt that is so tight
- you can't turn it, you can grasp the handle of
- the screwdriver with an adjustable wrench, a box
- wrench, or a pair of pliers and turn the
- screwdriver that way, for MUCH greater torque. At
- the same time, use your other hand to press down
- hard on the end of the screwdriver so that it
- won't come out of the slot in the head of the
- screw.
-
- "Neat idea!" you think as you start capturing
- messages in the Woodworking Category. While GEnie
- works, you can start cleaning the hopeless mess
- that is your kitchen.
-
- Deciding there has to be an easier way, you move to
- GEnie's Family and Personal Growth RoundTable. Home
- Management, Organization and Finance seems a likely
- place for tips to help you spruce up the house.
- "Sidetracked Home Executives -- S.H.E" looks
- interesting since there's no doubt that you get
- sidetracked every time you try to get organized.
-
- You're not quite sure whether to believe what

- I have a book on speed cleaning by Jeff Campbell
- and the Clean Team. Although I do like the SHE
- system, this book gives some good cleaning ideas
- and shortcuts. It deals with weekly cleaning, and
- says an average house cleaned by a three-person
- team takes them 45 minutes.
-
- You decide to call your friends and ask them to
- come over early. With all the hints you're finding
- on GEnie, surely they'll help clean house while you
- make dinner.
-
- With company coming early, you figure you'd better
- start thinking about what you're going to feed
- them. You move to the Food and Wine RoundTable.
- Hunger pains attack as you look through all the
- wonderful recipes. Today you want to make something
- quick and easy. You'd also like it spicy, and the
- Tex-Mex recipe topic looks inviting.
-
- As you look through the recipes, you're suddenly
- glad messages on GEnie don't scroll off after a few
- weeks -- the ideal meal for tonight was posted by
- D.FLINT4 [David-Albuq.] in 1991:
-
- Barry Goldwater's Arizona Chili
-
- 1 lb. ground beef
- 4 tbls. peanut oil or corn oil
- 1 lb. canned pinto beans
- 1 6-oz. can tomato puree
- 2 cups chopped onion
- 3 tbls. chili powder
- 1 tbls. cumin
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 cup water
-
- In large skillet, brown beef in oil. Remove meat
- and drain off excess grease. Add pinto beans,
- tomato puree and onion and saute for about two
- minutes. Mix chili powder, cumin and salt into
- water and pour into skillet. Bring to a boil, add
- meat, lower to a simmer and cook for about 20
- minutes. Serves six.
-
- "Wish you could cook as well as you can recipe,
- GEnie," you say as you take a peek at California
- Style recipes and spot one from Sylvia Mease,
- COOKIE.LADY:
-
- Banana Rumaki
-
- 8 to 10 bacon slices, cut in half 5 bananas,
- slightly underripe 1/2 cup brown sugar 1
- Tablespoon curry powder
-
- Blanch bacon in boiling water for 10 minutes.
- Drain and dry thoroughly. Cut bananas into 1 1/2
- inch chunks and wrap in bacon, securing it closed
- with a toothpick. Combine brown sugar and curry
- powder and sprinkle on wrapped bananas. Bake on
- rack for about 10 minutes at 350 degrees until
- bacon is crisp and sugar is slightly caramelized.
-
- With dinner planned, it's time to do something
- about that stinky cat and dog! The PET-NET
- RoundTable has all the answers about animals, even
- about bathing a cat. Indeed, there is a topic on
- that very subject! You start reading and soon you
- can't help laughing over a conversation on cat
- shampoo:
-
- DESERT.MOON [Cheryl Leigh]:
-
- ...and I know a lady who used to bathe her cats
- (she shows household pets) in Dawn detergent. She
- thought it was the greatest thing in the world,
- until I convinced her to buy some Ring 5.
-
- S.EAST1 [Pam in CA]:
-
- Cheryl Leigh, Using Dawn to get rid of the oily
- marks makes sense once in a while. I wouldn't use
- it every time though. I'd hate for the poor cat
- to have "dish pan" skin!
-
- DESERT.MOON [Cheryl Leigh] at 19:52 EST
-
- Dishpan skin! LOL! But that's a good point. Too
- much Dawn could dry the coat out...
-
- It's time to head to the store. While you're gone,
- GEnie will be at work. You know that the Automotive
- RoundTable will have suggestions on how to clean
- your car's aluminum wheels, there are more hints on
- sprucing up the house in the Home & Real Estate
- RoundTable, and the Gardening RoundTable will help
- fix that bare spot on the lawn that the dog
- discovered.
-
- You decide waking up on a nice Spring Saturday
- morning isn't such a bad idea after all -- as long
- as there's a GEnie in the house!
