- For years the Macintosh bunch astride their
- Motorola steeds have battled those ornery
- IBM-compatible dudes on their Intel mounts for
- control of that wild and lawless western town known
- as Marketshare. Now, there's a new bunch in town --
- the Power PC gang -- and computing will never be
- the same! They're riding a new-fangled breed known
- as a RISC, with some on new Apple models while
- others ride IBM.
-
- Power PC RoundTable
-
- Welcome to life on the wild frontier of computing.
- It's a dangerous place to find yourself without a
- guide, and you'll find the best guides around in
- the Power PC RoundTable at Page 1435. This
- RoundTable is hosted by Dean Esmay, owner of
- Syndicom; Donnie Grimes, RoundTable manager; Ed
- Reppert, librarian; and Tyler D. Weismann,
- Real-Time Conference host. Their collective
- experience in computing and sysoping provided the
- basis for getting this new RoundTable running
- without a hitch.
-
- If you're hungering for the speed and power of the
- new boxes but wondering about compatibility,
- "native apps," upgrading your current Mac versus
- buying a new box, or a host of other worrisome
- decisions, check with the Sunday night Conference
- bunch and read the messages on the Bulletin Boards.
- You'll gather useful information from a variety of
- participants, ranging from average users to crack
- programmers and industry heavyweights. And, if
- you're a programmer looking to get a jumpstart on
- these hot new machines, there's no better place to
- find what you need than the Power PC Programmer's
- RoundTable at Page 1440.
-
- Macintosh Product Support
-
- Keeping your hardware and software up-to-date is a
- lot like keeping a herd of restless cattle in line.
- Smart Macintosh owners stop by the Macintosh
- Product Support RoundTable on Page 606. You'll find
- many of your favorite vendors online there, ready
- to keep you informed of upgrades, bug fixes, work
- arounds, and technical tips. Getting help online is
- far more convenient than dangling on the end of a
- long distance phone line while some harried tech
- support person works through the queue. Don't
- forget the Product Support Software Library
- either; it's the place to check for program
- updates, demos, and add-in modules.
-
- Macintosh RoundTable
-
- It's a sad fact of life that bandits, rustlers,
- pirates, and other nasty critters are on the range
- as well. If you want to keep virus varmints off
- your spread, you can't do better than to rope
- yourself a copy of DISINFECTANT from the Macintosh
- Software Library (Page 605;3). At press time, the
- most recent version is in File 31761 (version
- 3.4.1). The Mac community owes John Norstad and
- friends a big vote of thanks for creating and
- supporting this excellent, freely distributable
- program and protection init. Somebody stick a
- marshall's badge on that hombre!
-
- If scraps of scribbled notes with names and phone
- numbers are cluttering up your ranch house, it's
- time to clean up with File 15360 FONEMATE 1.8.SIT,
- a clever program that helps you keep track of
- names, phone numbers, and GE Mail addresses. It's
- small and doesn't take a lot of memory.
-
- Maybe it's time to spruce up your boring old Mac
- screen as well. Handy Mac decorating aids include
- File 31670 HYPERCARD TOOLBOX, a neat stack of
- buttons, cursors, animated cursors, and sounds that
- you can add to your own stacks. And File 31669
- FOLDER ICON MAKER promises to transform boring
- folders into awesome new ones.
-
- Finally, if you've got a hungry bunch of range
- hands headed for your chuckwagon, better load up
- your PowerBook with File 31589 THE COMPUTER
- COOKBOOK, a FileMaker Pro Layout that lets you
- enter, view, sort, print, and recalculate recipes.
- You can enter them in cookbook style (for example,
- 2 3/4 cups) before you chow down!
-
- For good fellowship and the best tips,
- troubleshooting, advice, and humor in town, sidle
- up to your favorite Real-Time Conference (RTC) and
- order a long, cold one from the moderator. The
- regular schedule runs like this:
