- There's something funny going on over at the Visual
- Arts and Crafts RoundTable (Page 1510, Keyword
- ARTS). People are making faces, getting mugged and
- doing strips -- and no one's been arrested!
-
- In fact, they're having a ball. "They" are the
- SNICKERS Bunch -- the Society of New & Improved
- Caricature Enthusiasts, Ralliers, & Supporters, a
- "self-imposed designation for an informal group of
- cartoonists, caricaturists, and 'wannabees' who
- have met each other through their home computers,"
- explains noted caricaturist Lee Suckow, the group's
- leader and spiritual guru.
-
- SNICKERDOODLERs Unite
-
- Not surprisingly, what has developed into a popular
- and hugely-successful attraction started out rather
- small, with three people. Just over a year ago,
- SNICKERDOODLERS Carole Kerker, Katie Hoeppner, and
- Lee Suckow began a daily deluge of caricaturing
- conversations on the Hobby RoundTable Bulletin
- Board.
-
- "One-by-one other GEnie users who had an interest
- in drawing joined into the conversations," Lee
- says. "Through these frequent chats, plans were
- made to exchange caricatures by US Mail; and in
- November several of the "Newbies" participated
- along with the three original SNICKERS Bunch in a
- Christmas- related exchange in which artists
- caricatured celebrities in Santa attire."
-
- Carole Kerker's drawing of Dolly Parton wearing a
- Santa cap provided Lee with an irresistible
- opening. With a mischievous gleam in his eye, he
- mailed back a tracing of her caricature showing how
- the depiction of the subject's nose might be
- improved. Discussion about this bold act was fast
- and furious, and eventually led to the creation of
- the Nose News -- a full page of Lee's suggestions
- for drawing noses.
-
- The Art of Learning
-
- One thing led to another, and before you could say
- "cartoon caricature," the Nose News evolved into
- the concept of conducting an online Cartoon
- College.
-
- And so, in December of 1993, the On-Line Cartooning
- and Caricaturing Course -- or OLCCC -- was born.
-
- Enrollment is as easy as it is inexpensive.
- Students send Lee an SASE (Self-Addressed Stamped
- Envelope) plus one dollar for each lesson. Every
- month he mails out a set of study sheets and then
- posts his lectures and conducts class discussions
- on the Visual Arts & Crafts Bulletin Board in
- Category 8, Topic 3.
-
- The OLCCC course is deceptively simple. "It begins
- with a lesson on simple ways to cartoon the human
- head, moves on to an examination of features such
- as the nose, eyes, and ears, and continues with
- facial expressions -- attaching the head to the
- body, putting to body into motion, and so on," Lee
- explains. "The plan is to begin with very
- elementary drawing skills and gradually increase
- those until the participants are ready to attempt
- caricaturing. In this way persons with little or no
- background in cartooning, as well as those with
- more experience, can take part."
-
- The OLCCC was an instant hit. By early February an
- even dozen members of the SNICKERS bunch were
- involved. Scattered from California and Texas, to
- Florida, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and
- Wisconsin, they were united by their passion for
- the art of cartooning and caricaturing and their
- desire to share their experiences.
-
- Rally Round the RT
-
- The fun doesn't stop there. The SNICKERS bunch
- conducts monthly Rallys (Category 8, Topics 2 and
- 5) in which members exchange drawings of
- celebrities -- Jerry Seinfeld and Whoopi Goldberg,
- to name a couple of recent candidates. They also
- hold Mini-Jams every month (Category 8, Topic 8) in
- which everyone collaborates on producing a
- mini-comic. And Katie Hoeppner recently launched
- the idea of 'mugging,' where members create 'police
- sketch' caricatures of each other based solely on
- verbal descriptions. The results are always
- interesting, and often hilarious.
-
- The OLCCC isn't the only course available in the
- Visual Arts & Crafts RoundTable. You can also take
- a course in funny animal cartooning, taught by G.
- Raymond Eddy, in Category 8, Topic 7. And you can
- get great tips and advice on computer art from the
- author of the computer animation program CONDOR, in
- Category 13.
-
- Whether your interests lie in cartooning and
- caricaturing, in folk art or jewellery making, in
- acrylics, watercolors, clay, porcelain or rubber
- art, you'll find plenty of information and
- inspiration in the Visual Arts and Crafts RT --
- where there's something funny, or entertaining, or
- educational going on, seven days a week.
