  1. It's that time of year again. Time to dust off the
  2. lawn furniture, dig out the swimsuits, and hunt up
  3. the suntan lotion. Those lazy, hazy days are almost
  4. here; days of bicycles, baseball, barbecues -- and
  5. summer vacations.

  7. Summer vacations come around once a year, leaving
  8. lots of time for preparation. But somehow we seem
  9. to leave those insignificant details -- like
  10. picking a destination -- to the last minute. Maybe
  11. it's the adrenaline rush we experience when we
  12. discover that we haven't made hotel reservations,
  13. or that seasonal rains have flooded the campground.
  14. Or maybe it's just because we didn't know where to
  15. look for help.

  17. Well, help is at hand, right here on GEnie.

  19. In the virtual community of GEnie, a wealth of
  20. resources, information and services are as close as
  21. your keyboard. You can plan trips, scout locations,
  22. get information on everything from prices to
  23. politics -- even book airfare and make hotel

  26. Three To Get Ready

  28. Before you can make travel arrangements and book
  29. accommodations, you need to decide where you're
  30. going to go and what you're going to do. There are
  31. three excellent resources available to you for that
  32. purpose -- the Travel RoundTable, the Adventure
  33. Atlas, and the Disney RoundTable.

  35. At the Travel RoundTable (see below for GEnie Pages
  36. and Keywords), you'll find answers to all your
  37. questions, and even discover a few questions you
  38. wouldn't think to ask.

  40. There are over 1100 files in the Travel RoundTable
  41. Library, and a Bulletin Board with over 400 topics
  42. covering almost every conceivable aspect of
  43. vacation planning and travel. There's information
  44. on travel safety, hotels, restaurants, car rentals
  45. and shopping; hints and tips on customs, passports,
  46. baggage theft, and packing; schedules for trains,
  47. planes and automobiles; information on cruises,
  48. even ideas for exotic vacations.

  50. GEnie's Adventure Atlas provides a unique online
  51. database that lets you search for and compare
  52. specific vacations based on Trip Category or
  53. Country.

  55. If you choose Category, you're presented with a
  56. list of generic types that range from kayaking to
  57. safari. You're then asked to select the month,
  58. region, country and state, and are presented with a
  59. listing of vacation packages. Select one that
  60. appeals to you, and the database will display all
  61. the information about that particular trip.

  63. Choosing the Country option lets you search the
  64. database on the basis of location. Want to vacation
  65. in Banff? Or explore Australia? Just select the
  66. country, state and month, and you're once again
  67. presented with a list of vacation choices.

  69. Once you've selected a trip, all you have to do is
  70. post a message via the Adventure Atlas Feedback
  71. option, and detailed information will be sent to
  72. you. Talk about easy!

  74. Of course, when it comes to family vacations,
  75. Disneyland is a natural. But there are still lots
  76. of decisions to be made. Will it be Disneyland in
  77. California, Walt Disney World in Florida? Euro
  78. Disneyland in France or Tokyo Disneyland in Japan?
  79. And then there are questions about ticket prices,
  80. attractions, hours, on-site accommodations, shows,
  81. and special events. With representatives from
  82. various Disney Company Departments available
  83. online, the Disney RoundTable can answer these
  84. questions and more.

  88. One of the thrills of vacationing is exploring new
  89. places. It's also one of the risks. Unless you know
  90. someone who lives there or has been where you're
  91. going, it's always a good idea to find out a little
  92. bit about your destination. So, what do you do? Hit
  93. the library and check out a stack of books? Or take
  94. a quick trip to one of the many area RoundTables on
  95. GEnie and talk directly with folks who live there?

  106. everything, from weather and traffic conditions to
  107. local attractions, events, shows, entertainment and
  108. prices.

  110. Getting There is All the Fun

  112. Alright, you've decided where you're going and what
  113. you're doing. Now you have to decide how to get
  114. there, and where you're going to stay. Next stop?
  115. Eaasy Sabre, or OAG.

  117. American Airlines Eaasy Sabre at Page 760 (item #1
  118. from the Travel Services main menu, keyword SABRE)
  119. gives you access to flight, hotel and weather
  120. information at normal GEnie rates. Once you set up
  121. an account on the Eaasy Sabre System, you can book
  122. flights and make hotel reservations online.

  124. The OAG Electronic Edition (R) Travel Service (item
  125. #4 from the Travel Services main menu, keyword OAG)
  126. contains several travel related databases that let
  127. you view schedules for over 600 airlines and over
  128. 37,500 hotels in North America, Europe, and the
  129. Pacific. It also provides access to U.S. and State
  130. Department travel advisories, weather forecast
  131. information, currency exchange rates, travel news
  132. and more.

  134. Small Sacrifices
  135.   
  136. With all this information and all these resources
  137. at your fingertips, you won't need to worry about
  138. your next family vacation turning into a Chevy
  139. Chase movie. And you won't need to spend as much
  140. time, effort and money preparing the trip as taking
  141. it.

  143. Of course, you'll have to learn to live without
  144. that adrenaline rush.
