  1. If you're reading Multimedia LiveWire, the map of
  2. GEnie Town on our opening page probably tipped you
  3. off to this month's theme: Virtual Communities.
  4.   
  5. Virtual Community is a buzzword that indicates
  6. interaction between people who share common
  7. interests online. As people get acquainted by
  8. forming Virtual Communities, they often develop a
  9. sense of belonging -- that welcome feeling that
  10. somebody out there cares -- which can be rewarding
  11. despite knowing that face-to-face meetings are a
  12. long-shot.

  14. Becoming an active member of a Virtual Community --
  15. whether your interest is as structured as a
  16. computing platform or as free-form as making
  17. friends in Chat Lines -- is a way of expanding the
  18. boundaries of your life; your can shrink the world
  19. by getting opinions and reactions from people far
  20. removed from your geographical home territory.
  21. Virtual Communities bust other boundaries, too; for
  22. example, those based on age, sex, politics,
  23. religion, and nationality -- traits that can get in
  24. the way of really communicating with someone.
  25. Participating in a Virtual Community can expand
  26. your horizons and provide you with membership in a
  27. world-wide community.

  29. Last Minute Help

  31. Another important aspect of a Virutal Community is
  32. the availability of hard facts and information, and
  33. an excellent example of this is GEnie's New Tax
  34. RoundTable on Page (get this!) 1040.

  36. If you're looking for last minute Income Tax help
  37. or IRS forms, type M1040 or the Keyword TAX at any
  38. GEnie page prompt. You'll find answers to federal
  39. income tax questions in the Bulletin Board and
  40. Real-Time Conference area there, and a slug of a
  41. official IRS forms, publications, and instructions
  42. in the Library. Many of these forms are available
  43. in Adobe Acrobat PDF format which can be produced
  44. on your printer and used for your tax returns. All
  45. you need to handle PDF files is Adobe's Acrobat
  46. Reader -- which you can get from the Tax Library
  47. simply for the cost of the download!

  49. Adobe Acrobat Reader

  51. Adobe's Acrobat Reader software allows DOS,
  52. Windows, and Macintosh owners to view and print
  53. documents saved in PDF format no matter what system
  54. or software was initially used to create them.
  55. Acrobat Reader works with most printers commonly in
  56. use today (EXCEPT the 9-pin dot matrix variety).

  58. To download a list of hundreds of the files
  59. available in the Tax Library, get the Aladdin
  60. NetSearch Go-Fer Script for THIS issue of LiveWire
  61. (available from any Aladdin Library or free of
  62. basic connect charges in the LiveWire Library on
  63. GEnie Page 20) and select File# 1076 (TEXT) or 1077
  64. (ZIP) as described in NetSearch this month.

  68. There isn't space in LiveWire to mention -- much
  69. less tell you about -- all the many popular Virtual
  70. Communities on GEnie. But another of particular
  71. interest this month is the Family and Personal
  72. Growth RoundTable on Page 1235 (Keyword FAMILY).

  74. As an invitation to join their Virtual Community on
  75. the occasion of their second birthday, the Family
  76. RoundTable's Bulletin Board will be free of
  77. standard connect charges starting at 8 PM Eastern
  78. time on Wednesday, April 20, until 8 AM the
  79. following morning. Chat live with sysops and other
  80. FAMILY members free of standard connect charges in
  81. their Conference area that night (Wednesday, April
  82. 20) from 8 PM until 2 AM Eastern time as well.

  85. planned for teens during the entire month of April,
  86. so don't miss this opportunity for all family
  87. members to get acquainted, virtual or otherwise.
