- If you're reading Multimedia LiveWire, the map of
- GEnie Town on our opening page probably tipped you
- off to this month's theme: Virtual Communities.
-
- Virtual Community is a buzzword that indicates
- interaction between people who share common
- interests online. As people get acquainted by
- forming Virtual Communities, they often develop a
- sense of belonging -- that welcome feeling that
- somebody out there cares -- which can be rewarding
- despite knowing that face-to-face meetings are a
- long-shot.
-
- Becoming an active member of a Virtual Community --
- whether your interest is as structured as a
- computing platform or as free-form as making
- friends in Chat Lines -- is a way of expanding the
- boundaries of your life; your can shrink the world
- by getting opinions and reactions from people far
- removed from your geographical home territory.
- Virtual Communities bust other boundaries, too; for
- example, those based on age, sex, politics,
- religion, and nationality -- traits that can get in
- the way of really communicating with someone.
- Participating in a Virtual Community can expand
- your horizons and provide you with membership in a
- world-wide community.
-
- Last Minute Help
-
- Another important aspect of a Virutal Community is
- the availability of hard facts and information, and
- an excellent example of this is GEnie's New Tax
- RoundTable on Page (get this!) 1040.
-
- If you're looking for last minute Income Tax help
- or IRS forms, type M1040 or the Keyword TAX at any
- GEnie page prompt. You'll find answers to federal
- income tax questions in the Bulletin Board and
- Real-Time Conference area there, and a slug of a
- official IRS forms, publications, and instructions
- in the Library. Many of these forms are available
- in Adobe Acrobat PDF format which can be produced
- on your printer and used for your tax returns. All
- you need to handle PDF files is Adobe's Acrobat
- Reader -- which you can get from the Tax Library
- simply for the cost of the download!
-
- Adobe Acrobat Reader
-
- Adobe's Acrobat Reader software allows DOS,
- Windows, and Macintosh owners to view and print
- documents saved in PDF format no matter what system
- or software was initially used to create them.
- Acrobat Reader works with most printers commonly in
- use today (EXCEPT the 9-pin dot matrix variety).
-
- To download a list of hundreds of the files
- available in the Tax Library, get the Aladdin
- NetSearch Go-Fer Script for THIS issue of LiveWire
- (available from any Aladdin Library or free of
- basic connect charges in the LiveWire Library on
- GEnie Page 20) and select File# 1076 (TEXT) or 1077
- (ZIP) as described in NetSearch this month.
-
- It's All in the FAMILY
-
- There isn't space in LiveWire to mention -- much
- less tell you about -- all the many popular Virtual
- Communities on GEnie. But another of particular
- interest this month is the Family and Personal
- Growth RoundTable on Page 1235 (Keyword FAMILY).
-
- As an invitation to join their Virtual Community on
- the occasion of their second birthday, the Family
- RoundTable's Bulletin Board will be free of
- standard connect charges starting at 8 PM Eastern
- time on Wednesday, April 20, until 8 AM the
- following morning. Chat live with sysops and other
- FAMILY members free of standard connect charges in
- their Conference area that night (Wednesday, April
- 20) from 8 PM until 2 AM Eastern time as well.
-
- The Family RoundTable has special activities
- planned for teens during the entire month of April,
- so don't miss this opportunity for all family
- members to get acquainted, virtual or otherwise.
-
- Spring RoundUp Coming
-
- The eye-catching GEnie Town map on our Multimedia
- opening page was designed by Bruce Robison,
- LiveWire's Art Director. Artist Walt Meyers did the
- traffic-stopping article frames and, working
- together miles apart, he and Bruce designed and
- drew the images for this issue. Our toe-tapping
- tunes include two original compositions (World and
- Fantasia) by Howard Wooten, our Music Director.
-
- Tune in next month for LiveWire's rambunctious
- Spring RoundUp issue, and be sure to wear your
- cowboy hat! Remember...
-
- GEnie: The most fun you can have with your computer
- on!
-
-
- Seeya online!
