- One of the most amazing things about working and studying in the CALC
- Online Campus on GEnie is the realization that we are all involved in a
- lively campus atmosphere, yet we have never seen each other. CALC teachers
- are from all across America, as are the students, and it is second nature
- for us to come together in the Real-Time Classrooms and Bulletin Boards for
- on-going instruction and discussion, virtually any time of day or night.
- I'd like to introduce you to four of the CALC instructors.
-
- Mathematics instructor, Gene Austin (CALC-GA), offers three levels of
- Calculus courses each term in CALC, in addition to helping out with math
- tutoring. Gene has a Bachelors degree in Engineering Physics from the
- University of Montana and a Masters degree in Natural Science with
- mathematics emphasis from the University of Idaho. He is a retired high
- school mathematics teacher of 25 years and has taught numerous math and
- computer applications courses to adult students in his off-line work at
- North Idaho College. You'll find a friendly and knowledgeable instructor
- in Gene Austin; he might even share some of his war stories from his days
- as a World War II pilot and a Korean war veteran. Gene is interested in
- multimedia as applied to mathematical instruction and is helping with
- CALC's plans for a line of instructional shareware.
-
- Recently returned from sabbatical is Michael Moore (CALC-MLM), one of our
- Computer Science instructors. Michael has a Bachelors degree in Pharmacy
- from the University of Michigan and has done graduate study in LISP,
- Pascal, and 80XX Assembly Language at Eastern Michigan University. He has
- been teaching at CALC since 1988 and is a veteran in online instruction.
- During his sabbatical last year, you may have missed his popular series of
- Assembly Language and Pascal Programming courses, which are now back again.
- Michael is introducing a new course this spring on UNIX.
-
- Nina Lee Braden (NINA-LEE) shares teaching duties among several academic
- departments. She heads up CALC's GED Preparation Program for high school
- equivalency instruction. Nina Lee also teaches several English courses,
- including Reading Short Stories and 20th Century Novel, both offered this
- spring. Last fall, she joined the Computer Science department and is
- offering two courses that are components of CALC PC Applications
- Certificate Program: Introduction to DOS, and Windows Fundamentals. Nina
- Lee has Bachelors and Masters degrees in English, and is studying for a
- Doctorate in English at the University of Tennessee.
-
- Science instructor, Bernie Hiles (CALC-BH), has been teaching online since
- 1987. He offers two Chemistry courses each term which encompass high school
- through college level. He also provides live tutoring in science every week
- on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the CALC Real-Time Conference area. Bernie is
- a retired educator; he taught chemistry for 15 years and he was an
- educational media coordinator for another 15. He has Bachelors and Masters
- degrees in science from the University of Kentucky and the University of
- Virginia with emphasis in biology, chemistry, and physics. He is presently
- working toward a PhD in Educational Administration and operates a small
- media service company in Kentucky.
-
- When you come on campus, you will see these instructors as well as the rest
- of our varied and professional faculty. Stop by and say "Hi!" We're always
- happy to welcome new students into CALC.
