- Interesting activities and developments took place
- in the A2 RoundTable in February. Perhaps most
- significant was the release of HyperCard IIgs for
- electronic distribution. This coup was arranged by
- Matt Deatherage of Apple Computer, and credit for
- it most certainly belongs to him as well as the
- A2Pro RoundTable. The program is also available in
- the A2 Library, where it is generating excitement
- throughout the Apple II community. Thanks, Matt!

- Virtual Community
-
- The Apple II community is mostly virtual these
- days, due to discontinuation of the line by Apple
- last year. Yet while support from dealers is drying
- up, and magazines and other sources of
- non-electronic information are becoming harder to
- find, our virtual community remains strong and
- healthy.
-
- As has always been the case, the best sources of
- support and information about Apple II computers
- are the users themselves. The best thing about
- owning an Apple II may not be the computer itself
- (wonderful as it may be) but membership in the
- Apple II community that comes with it. Friendly,
- knowledgeable, helpful users have been the mainstay
- of the Apple II community since its inception, and
- that continues to be the case today.
-
- These days, people meet online more than anywhere
- else. Where once the virtual community was a
- relatively small part of the overall Apple II
- environment, it has now become THE source for Apple
- II news and information, as well as its active
- "community center." People meet and mingle online,
- where they communicate with other owners all over
- the world.
-
- We have a standing topic in the A2 RoundTable where
- Apple II owners arrange "mini" meetings and
- conventions both locally and on a regional basis.
- Social evenings in restaurants in centrally located
- areas are often organized there, and have become a
- new source of camaraderie.
-
- New Products
-
- Despite the "demise" of the Apple II line,
- third-party vendor support in terms of software and
- hardware continues to grow on GEnie.
-
- Recently released new software includes a
- telecommunications program for the Apple IIgs that
- operates in the GS Desktop environment, and home
- finance genealogy programs for the IIgs. In
- addition to new products, updated versions of older
- programs have been released recently, keeping those
- programs current with state-of-the-art. All of
- these programs are currently being discussed on the
- A2 Bulletin Board, and both developer and user
- support continues as a strong part of the virtual
- community of A2.
-
- CD-ROM Developments
-
- On the border between the software and hardware
- sides, we have recently seen the announcement of
- software drivers and programs which allow the use
- of CD-ROM discs from other platforms (primarily
- Macintosh and IBM) on the Apple IIgs. The GS can
- now read and manipulate data from these foreign
- environments in a useful manner.
-
- The most notable hardware development is the
- BlueDisk controller card, which allows the use of
- any IBM-style floppy drive on an Apple. Whereas
- users were formerly limited to specific "Apple
- compatible" (which means, primarily, Apple
- Computer) drives, they now have their choice of a
- full range of inexpensive units from the
- IBM-compatible market.
-
- The BlueDisk controller, incidentally, was
- developed and manufactured in Europe, and its
- appearance in the U.S. was motivated and
- facilitated by the strong electronic ties provided
- by GEnie. Were it not for the ease of communication
- provided by GEnie around the world and the virtual
- community of Apple II users that is the A2
- RoundTable, it is likely that we never would have
- heard of this extremely useful hardware.
-
- Information about, and discussion of what's new and
- wonderful in the Apple II community are always
- available in A2, and everyone who uses an Apple
- computer owes it to himself to become a member of
- that virtual community.
