  1. Interesting activities and developments took place
  2. in the A2 RoundTable in February. Perhaps most
  3. significant was the release of HyperCard IIgs for
  4. electronic distribution. This coup was arranged by
  5. Matt Deatherage of Apple Computer, and credit for
  6. it most certainly belongs to him as well as the
  7. A2Pro RoundTable. The program is also available in
  8. the A2 Library, where it is generating excitement
  9. throughout the Apple II community. Thanks, Matt!

  11. Virtual Community
  12.   
  13. The Apple II community is mostly virtual these
  14. days, due to discontinuation of the line by Apple
  15. last year. Yet while support from dealers is drying
  16. up, and magazines and other sources of
  17. non-electronic information are becoming harder to
  18. find, our virtual community remains strong and
  19. healthy.
  20.   
  21. As has always been the case, the best sources of
  22. support and information about Apple II computers
  23. are the users themselves. The best thing about
  24. owning an Apple II may not be the computer itself
  25. (wonderful as it may be) but membership in the
  26. Apple II community that comes with it. Friendly,
  27. knowledgeable, helpful users have been the mainstay
  28. of the Apple II community since its inception, and
  29. that continues to be the case today.
  30.   
  31. These days, people meet online more than anywhere
  32. else. Where once the virtual community was a
  33. relatively small part of the overall Apple II
  34. environment, it has now become THE source for Apple
  35. II news and information, as well as its active
  36. "community center." People meet and mingle online,
  37. where they communicate with other owners all over
  38. the world.
  39.   
  40. We have a standing topic in the A2 RoundTable where
  41. Apple II owners arrange "mini" meetings and
  42. conventions both locally and on a regional basis.
  43. Social evenings in restaurants in centrally located
  44. areas are often organized there, and have become a
  45. new source of camaraderie.
  46.   
  47. New Products
  48.   
  49. Despite the "demise" of the Apple II line,
  50. third-party vendor support in terms of software and
  51. hardware continues to grow on GEnie.
  52.   
  53. Recently released new software includes a
  54. telecommunications program for the Apple IIgs that
  55. operates in the GS Desktop environment, and home
  56. finance genealogy programs for the IIgs. In
  57. addition to new products, updated versions of older
  58. programs have been released recently, keeping those
  59. programs current with state-of-the-art. All of
  60. these programs are currently being discussed on the
  61. A2 Bulletin Board, and both developer and user
  62. support continues as a strong part of the virtual
  63. community of A2.

  65. CD-ROM Developments
  66.   
  67. On the border between the software and hardware
  68. sides, we have recently seen the announcement of
  69. software drivers and programs which allow the use
  70. of CD-ROM discs from other platforms (primarily
  71. Macintosh and IBM) on the Apple IIgs. The GS can
  72. now read and manipulate data from these foreign
  73. environments in a useful manner.

  75. The most notable hardware development is the
  76. BlueDisk controller card, which allows the use of
  77. any IBM-style floppy drive on an Apple. Whereas
  78. users were formerly limited to specific "Apple
  79. compatible" (which means, primarily, Apple
  80. Computer) drives, they now have their choice of a
  81. full range of inexpensive units from the
  82. IBM-compatible market.

  84. The BlueDisk controller, incidentally, was
  85. developed and manufactured in Europe, and its
  86. appearance in the U.S. was motivated and
  87. facilitated by the strong electronic ties provided
  88. by GEnie. Were it not for the ease of communication
  89. provided by GEnie around the world and the virtual
  90. community of Apple II users that is the A2
  91. RoundTable, it is likely that we never would have
  92. heard of this extremely useful hardware.

  94. Information about, and discussion of what's new and
  95. wonderful in the Apple II community are always
  96. available in A2, and everyone who uses an Apple
  97. computer owes it to himself to become a member of
  98. that virtual community.
