  1. If you only use Aladdin's built-in functions (such
  2. as retrieving GE Mail and staying current with
  3. RoundTable activities), you may be missing out on a
  4. great deal of valuable things that GEnie has to
  5. offer. This situation is easily correctable through
  6. use of Aladdin's Scripts, a powerful accessory to
  7. the built-in features of GEnie's automated
  8. communications program.
  9.   
  10. Whether you use an IBM-compatible, Atari ST or
  11. Amiga, after using Aladdin a while it can be a
  12. novelty to manually navigate your way around GEnie
  13. for non-RoundTable needs. If you repeat any of them
  14. with regularity, they can be automated using
  15. scripts. There are times you don't have the luxury
  16. of navigating for "enjoyment," and that's when it
  17. becomes a tedious task. Scripting the process can
  18. reduce those chores to a one key-press operation!
  19.   
  20. Scripts vs. Macros
  21.   
  22. Macros are recorded keystrokes that can be played
  23. at your command. These keystrokes are replayed as
  24. fast as possible, without intelligent regard for
  25. what they're doing. Useful for automating some
  26. common operations in Aladdin itself, macros are not
  27. well suited for performing custom online
  28. operations.
  29.   
  30. Scripts, on the other hand, consist of commands
  31. which simulate actions you might do interactively
  32. on GEnie or with Aladdin in general. They can wait
  33. for online queues, open and close capture logs, and
  34. react to various responses from GEnie during an
  35. online session. Scripts used for online operations
  36. can be made "intelligent" in the sense that they
  37. can do your bidding just as you'd like it done.

  39. The Power of Scripts
  40.   
  41. Let's look at some examples:
  42.   
  43.   Ever wish you could have Aladdin log on and run
  44.   an Auto Pass at a specific time of day -- without
  45.   you being at your computer?
  46.   
  47.   Wouldn't it be nice if Aladdin could download a
  48.   Soap Opera Summary or your favorite stock quotes
  49.   during an Auto Pass?
  50.   
  51.   Do you frequently send text files to an
  52.   associate's fax machine, but wish you had a less
  53.   tedious method of doing so?
  54.   
  55.   Ever considered sending yourself a GEnie
  56.   Reminder, but didn't because you'd have to enter
  57.   it manually online?
  58.   
  59.   Maybe you'd like to retrieve news, sports, or
  60.   weather forecasts from GEnie,   but doing so
  61.   regularly is just too much trouble.
  62.   
  63.   Wouldn't it be nice to have a simpler way to
  64.   access the information in GEnie KnowledgeBases?
  65.   
  66. In response to each of these questions, an Aladdin
  67. script allows us to answer: "Can do!"
  68.   
  69. One of the more ambitious scripts available for
  70. Aladdin is called the SMMENU script. From it, you
  71. can choose an operation from a myriad of menu
  72. choices, -- including the normal Auto Pass --
  73. before you even log onto GEnie! Since all of these
  74. script operations are too numerous to fit into
  75. Aladdin's current script slots, your choices are
  76. picked from a menu the script generates. That's
  77. right; using scripts, YOU can create custom menu
  78. screens for all your Aladdin needs!

  80. Getting Started
  81.   
  82. Aladdin's Script Language is both simple and
  83. powerful, so you can do as much with it as you find
  84. necessary. When you create a script in Aladdin, the
  85. F1-Help facility is at your disposal. This lets you
  86. review definitions and usage parameters of all
  87. script commands while you build yours. There's also
  88. a detailed SCRIPT.DOC manual you can download for
  89. guidance in your scripting efforts.

  91. And there's already a wealth of scripts available
  92. online you can use right away! Unless you're
  93. experienced with scripting in general, this is
  94. probably the best way to get started; download and
  95. delve into existing scripts to see how they work
  96. their magic, or start with a simple one you can
  97. develop slowly along the way.

  99. While a lot of scripts have been created by GEnie's
  100. own Script Guru, Jim Lubin, let us not forget the
  101. wonderful contributions from fellow Aladdin users.
  102. Many people have found areas on GEnie they didn't
  103. realize existed -- it IS a big place -- or
  104. discovered new ways to utilize these GEnie jewels.
  105. Using a script makes access easy, and people often
  106. find information they get regularly this way to be
  107. essential to their lives, whether for entertainment
  108. or job-related purposes. Loads of scripts are
  109. shared in the Software Library and Bulletin Board
  110. for everyone's use.

  112. Finding Scripts
  113.   
  114. When you do create your own, remember that there's
  115. help available if you run into difficulty. If the
  116. Aladdin Script Guru doesn't have a script that will
  117. do your bidding, or there's not one that can be
  118. customized easily for you, he'll work with you to
  119. "grow your own." If it can be done with an Aladdin
  120. Script, Jim Lubin can find the way!

  122. A great deal of scripts created for GEnie PC
  123. Aladdin will work with the other flavors of
  124. Aladdin, too, specifically Atari ST Aladdin and
  125. Amiga Aladdin. Some may require modification, but
  126. the ideas and basic premise for how to accomplish a
  127. goal are there.

  129. Check the Bulletin Board and Software Library in
  130. the Aladdin Support RoundTable corresponding to
  131. your version of Aladdin. Searching on the keyword
  132. SCR or SCRIPT in both the Bulletin Board and
  133. Library should turn up lots of information -- or,

  144. scripts, utilities, and programs. Feel free to help
  145. yourself -- and others -- by being generous with
  146. your scripts and scripting ideas.

  149. and share your own Aladdin script, you may find a
  150. whole new world on GEnie along the way.
