- OS/2 RoundTable
- by Holly Jahangiri
-
- The OS/2 RoundTable is fast becoming the largest online resource for OS/2
- shareware and information anywhere. It is the online home for members of Team
- OS/2, a grassroots movement by experienced enthusiasts who share their
- knowledge with others. To find out about Team OS/2, drop by the RoundTable's
- Real-Time Conference any Tuesday night from 9:30 to 11:30 PM Eastern time,
- and chat with assistant sysops Stewart Hyde, Kevin Royalty, and other members
- of Team OS/2. Just type OS2 at any GEnie prompt.
-
- I Resolve...
-
- If installing OS/2 is on your list of New Year's Resolutions, you'll want to
- download file #595 OS2CNFG5.ZIP. It's a great explanation of CONFIG.SYS
- that's sure to ease the transition from MS-DOS and take some of the mystery
- out of configuring OS/2. OS2SETNG.ZIP (file #494) contains tips on tweaking
- OS/2 settings to get the best results from DOS programs.
-
- Dress up your desktop with icons! File #771 OS2ICONS8.ZIP contains 211 icons
- for OS/2 -- and if you search the Library you'll find even more. Once you
- have your desktop just the way you like it, use WPSbackup (#1441 WPS202.ZIP)
- to ensure that your handiwork is safe.
-
- FAQs and More
-
- You'll find answers to Frequently Asked Questions in file #1691 FAQ21D.ZIP.
- Regularly updated FAQ files like this are terrific sources of information.
- Performance Tuning for the End User (file #752 OS2PERF.INF) is handy for both
- novice and experienced users. For personalized help, the OS/2 Help Desk, run
- by sysop Jeff Elkins is open in the Conference area every Monday from 9:30 to
- 11:30 PM Eastern time.
-
- While the thought of taking a sledgehammer to the PC may be tempting on
- occasion, there ARE better tools available. For those times when you need to
- boot from a floppy diskette, BOOT2X.ZIP will help you create a boot floppy
- for OS/2 with just enough of the system on it to get the job done. And why
- mess with DISKCOPY when you can use a graphical, multi-threaded tool like PM
- Disk Copier/Formatter (file #1571 PMDCOPY.ZIP)? You'll also find 32-bit
- PK(UN)ZIP2.x-compatible utilities (files #592 ZIP19.EXE and #750 UNZ501.EXE)
- that let you handle long, HPFS file names and restore OS/2 Extended
- Attributes.
-
- You'll need a good communications package to take advantage of everything the
- OS/2 RoundTable has to offer, so why not use one designed to take advantage
- of what OS/2 has to offer? Zap-O-Com (file #1722 ZOC98F.ZIP) is a PM-based
- communications program with ZMODEM enabled. Oberon's TE/2 (file #895
- TE2_124.ZIP) is a native OS/2 program similar to Procomm. Oberon provides
- technical support for TE/2 in the Bulletin Board. Take your new
- communications software for a test drive by joining the fun of Wednesday Gen
- eral OS/2 Conferences from 9:30 to 11:30 PM Eastern time.
-
- Experienced OS/2 folks won't be disappointed, either. For those times when
- you need to dig in and get your hands virtually dirty by directly modifying
- OS/2 system INI files, file #890 EDTINI.ZIP is IBM Employee Written Software
- that gives you a way to do it. Find out what's new in this genre as updates
- and new programs are released in file #1128 EWSCAT.ZIP, a catalog of
- shareware written by IBM employees.
-
- Serious Assistance
-
- File #963 CDDBOC.ZIP will pause during execution of CONFIG.SYS and give you a
- command prompt so you can replace DLLs and device drivers before the system
- locks them. It's a good alternative to a boot floppy for many tasks.
- OS20MEMU.ZIP (#648) memory display for OS/2 shows you everything you always
- wanted to know (and probably more!) about how OS/2 and your applications are
- using your system memory. For an excellent technical guide, download file
- #1529 OS2TECHG.ZIP.
-
- OS/2 Programmers FAQ (file #638 OS2PGM61.ZIP) has answers to developer's
- Frequently Asked Questions, and file #1543 INT_SOM.ZIP provides an excellent
- introduction to the System Object Model (SOM), integral to the OS/2 Workplace
- Shell. IBM encourages programmers to use the SOM interface to help create
- well-integrated OS/2 applications. For GNU C/C++ for OS/2, search Library 17
- using the term GNU.
-
- The multimedia capabilities inherent in OS/2 present intriguing challenges
- for developers. For a taste of OS/2 multimedia entertainment, enjoy
- LASER05.ZIP, an excellent AVI movie. Beyond entertainment, sysop Brady
- Flowers has been writing software for OS/2 since 1987 and, most recently, has
- begun developing programs for the disabled. "There's a real need for it," he
- says, "and doing it makes me feel good." IBM's Continuous Speech Series
- allows voice interaction with the PC. "I'm going to be building that in to my
- software," Brady adds. "Expect to see more of it in the future."
