- Macintosh RoundTable
- by Stephen Kahn
-
- As 1994 arrives, thoughts inevitably turn to self-improvement. Yes, this is
- the year, we solemly vow, that we will lose those extra pounds, balance the
- budget, learn Spanish, and clean out the basement.
-
- In the rush for betterment, don't forget your poor Macintosh. Go ahead, take
- a good look at that once-proud system. If your processor is panting, your RAM
- reeling under System 7.1, your hard disk bursting at the seams with nary a
- kilobyte to spare, and half of your software is two versions out of date,
- it's time to set some system enhancement goals as well. You've come to the
- right place.
-
- Four Fountains of Knowledge
-
- It's an information jungle out there, folks! Don't leave home without
- checking the resources available from the Mac RoundTable. The GEnie Mac crew
- offers four direct routes to Macintosh knowledge and mastery: The Software
- Library, Bulletin Board, nightly Real-Time Conferences, and the ever-helpful
- counsel of Help Desk daemons. If you're seeking the epitome of Macintosh
- excellence in 1994, drink deeply from all four fountains of knowledge.
-
- Take, for example, hardware. Yes, shiny new machines beckon from dealer's
- shelves and magazine ads. But how will you pick the one that meets your
- needs, putting blistering speed on your desktop without hollowing out your
- bank account? How will you navigate through the maze of LCs, Centrises, and
- Quadras, not to mention Performas? (Wait a minute! Are we talking cars or
- computers?)
-
- How do you make sense (not to mention smart decisions) out of all these
- choices and options? The place to start is the Macintosh RoundTable Bulletin
- Board. If you want to get news about the latest equipment and learn from the
- trials and triumphs of Macintoshers who have visited their dealers with
- charge cards in hand, check out Category 23 for Quadras and whatever the
- plural of Centris is. In lively Topic 5, for example, you'll watch
- spellbound as local Mac wizards walk Japan-based GI Preston Madler through
- the intricacies of buying a new Mac, steering him past the hazards of a
- soon-to-be-obsolete Centris 610 just as the even hotter Quadra 610 comes on
- the market, while filling him in on the intricacies of the latest and
- greatest color monitors.
-
- In the process, you'll begin to make sense of 68030 versus LC040 versus 68040
- processors. You'll learn which has an FPU (Floating Point Unit) and which
- doesn't, when you don't need one and when you do, and when you can manage
- with the software FPU -- which is available as file #31199 SOFTWAREFPU
- 2.43.SEA in the Macintosh Software Library.
-
- And we haven't even begun to speak of the IIvx discussion in Category 22, the
- Performa comparisons in Category 24, or the PowerBook and Duo options mapped
- out in Category 25. For the smaller-is-better-especially-if-it's-newer crowd,
- Category 29 offers up-to-date Newton information. (And don't forget to check
- out Software Library 29, where you'll find the latest Newton software!)
-
- The Bleeding Edge
-
- That's just the Bulletin Board! When you need friendly, helpful real-time
- answers, stop by one of the Mac RoundTable Real-Time Conferences held every
- night except Friday and Saturday, or the Help Desk, which is open every night
- of the week except Saturday.
-
- If you want to live on the bleeding edge, visit the new Syndicomm-managed
- PowerPC RoundTable at GEnie Page 1435. It's only a few months until Apple
- will release its first PPC models. When they appear, you'll get the quickest,
- liveliest, and most penetrating comments around, right here on GEnie.
