- The GEnie Gamer: Scorpia's Domain
- by Jay Kee
-
- The universe is big; life is short. But games keep the world in a stable
- orbit. Without them, we'd all end up in a small room with spongy walls,
- wearing jackets with extra-long sleeves. Of course, as anyone who ever tried
- installing a big game to a small hard drive can attest -- having games can
- drive you just as crazy as not having them.
-
- So what do you do when your system bombs, your soundcard sounds like a
- beeper and your joystick is giving you everything but joy? Who're you going
- to call when you're lost in a maze, trapped in a dungeon or flying the
- unfriendly skies, crashing and burning and tearing your hair? Where are you
- going to go for hints, tips, advice, assistance, the latest upgrades and bug
- fixes, vendor support and even a bit of sympathetic comic relief?
-
- You log onto GEnie and type M805 or the keyword SCORPIA, and say hello to
- Scorpia's Games RoundTable. Or check yourself in at the nearest happy hotel.
-
- It's No Mystery
-
- Scorpia is a mysterious person who is an acknowledged and recognized games
- expert, particularly in the realm of computer RPGs and adventure games. Few
- have met her, but thousands know her through her reviews, walk-throughs, and
- editorials, or her popular column -- Scorpion's View -- in Computer Gaming
- World.
-
- What's not mysterious is her dedication to gamers and the games they play, a
- commitment that makes the Games RoundTable a great online entertainment
- resource.
-
- Started in 1985 as one of the original GEnie services, the Games RoundTable
- now covers the entire gaming galaxy -- from arcade, war and strategy games
- to RPGs, sports, simulations, board games and play-by-mail. But there's
- more, something that keeps players sane and therapists happy: an extensive
- network of product support.
-
- "We have over forty game and game-related companies online for product
- support," Scorpia confirms, "including Origin, Sierra, Microprose, SSI,
- FASA, West End Games, Avalon Hill, Advanced Gravis, and Thrustmaster, to
- name just a few." Many of them have their own Bulletin Board categories
- staffed by company reps, and are well represented in the library with
- numerous upgrades, hint files and bug fixes.
-
- Cornucopia of Computer Condiments
-
- Buying a game used to be a passive act -- you paid your money and took your
- chances. But with the Games RoundTable Bulletin Board as close as your
- keyboard, you can now plug into a widespread community of designers,
- programmers, marketers and consumers and take an active role in the process.
- If something's broke or won't work, you can talk to the company directly and
- get it looked after. You can share information, hints and tips with other
- players, get the latest scoop on new releases, even contribute sugge stions
- and ideas for improvements, upgrades and game sequels.
-
- In addition to the Product Support and computer game categories, the Games
- Bulletin Board houses separate categories for console games (Sega and
- Nintendo), roleplaying games and board games; for Diplomacy and Star Fleet
- Battles; for Computer strategy and wargames, and for play-by-mail games and
- Message RPGs -- roleplaying games played by posting messages on the Bulletin
- Board. There's even a category for Gaming Magazines and Newsletters.
- Overall, 35 Categories and hundreds of topics cover virtually every ga me in
- the known universe -- almost.
-
- The Library is another cornucopia of computer condiments with loads of great
- files -- shareware, game tips and walk-throughs, utilities, archives,
- commercial game demos, upgrades and patches. You'll find representation by
- Virgin/Westwood, Maxis, Origin, Microprose, Spectrum Holobyte, LucasArts,
- Sierra/Dynamix and SSI as well as the popular Universal Hint System, Fantasy
- Leagues and FASA. There's even an area for Gravis Ultrasound Files.
-
- The Games RoundTable holds regular weekly Real-Time Conferences: Tuesdays at
- 11 PM Eastern time is Star Fleet Battles Night; at 9:30 PM Eastern on
- Wednesday it's Ask The SysOps Night; Thursdays at 9:30 PM it's the weekly
- Open House (where almost anything goes), and Sundays at 8 PM it's Games Hint
- Night with the Clue Crew online to offer assistance with various games.
- Special Conferences are also frequently scheduled with special guests and
- game designers, so check the banner on the main menu at Page 805 to keep up
- to date.
-
- One Plus Two
-
- There are two ancillary RoundTables that are also a part of Scorpia's domain
- -- The Multi-Player Games RoundTable on Page 1045 (keyword MPGRT), and the
- Multi-Player Games Guild Bulletin Board at Page 1048.
-
- "The MPGRT provides support and information for all of GEnie's online
- multi-player games," Scorpia explains. "Each game has one or more categories
- devoted to it on the Bulletin Board. These areas are the best places for
- players, especially new players, to really learn the ins and outs of online
- gaming. Game developers and their staffs monitor the Boards regularly, and
- answer questions from the members, as well."
-
- The Libraries contain a variety of files relating to multi-player games,
- including graphical front-ends (FEs), sound files, transcripts of
- conferences with developers, archives of Bulletin Board discussions, maps,
- utilities, hints and strategies.
-
- In addition, regular weekly conferences are held for each of the major
- multi-player games: CyberStrike and Dragon's Gate on Mondays at 10 and 10:30
- PM Eastern; GemStone III and Air Warrior on Thursdays at 10; BattleTech on
- Fridays at 9:30 PM Eastern, and Federation II on Sundays. Players find these
- sessions quite therapeutic. They offer an informative and often entertaining
- forum to discuss ideas, tactics and problems, and game developers will often
- drop in unannounced and talk to players... well, modem-to- modem.
-
- The MPG Guild Bulletin Board affords players from Air Warrior, Battletech,
- Cyberstrike, Dragon's Gate, Federation II and GemStone III a unique
- roleplaying resource. Here, various teams, guilds, houses, or squads
- maintain private categories to conduct their business. And players can talk
- about everything from tactics and skills, to setting up duels and settling
- scores. In character, of course.
-
- The Answer to the Ultimate Question
-
- In this universe, games are one of the few things which cross the boundaries
- of race, religion, language and politics. They can be an obsession and a
- passion. Scorpia's domain on GEnie is the United Nations and the Mayo Clinic
- of Games. Gamers everywhere rejoice, while their analysts weep.
