- A Citation You'll Want to Receive
- by Donn King
-
- Yes, sir, it's the time of year when a lot of us are back in school. Maybe
- you're in high school or college and need help researching a topic for a
- paper -- or perhaps you're in the bigger School of Life and need to research
- something for your job. Then, too, maybe you need to either find or verify a
- couple of good quotations to "spice up" a letter or make a point.
-
- Whatever the reason, you need complete information, and you need it fast.
-
- GEnie's Bibliographic Citations Center (enter M1290 or the keyword CITATIONS
- at any GEnie page prompt) will show you the most recent articles on the
- topic of your choice, with complete title, author, and citation information,
- all in one step. All you need to know is your topic, and the system will do
- the rest. Quotations Online provides an equally fast and complete way to
- find and document those quotations.
-
- References on Request
-
- You can search for sources in academic and professional journals, magazines,
- newspapers, and trade journals in Bibliographic Citations Center. You'll be
- prompted to enter words or phrases that describe your topic. If you like,
- you can limit your results to a particular range of years.
-
- Enter words or phrases that describe your topic, and you'll get a list of up
- to 10 bibliographic citations showing the full title, author, and citation
- of each article. You can display additional bibliographic citations in
- groups of up to ten, and each additional group of up to ten that you request
- will result in an additional charge.
-
- As a GEnie$Premium service, Bibliographic Citations Center involves charges
- for search and retrieval in addition to connect time, so check the rates
- before you use it. Even if you don't, the service shows a running tally of
- your expenses so you won't get caught by surprise.
-
- You should carefully plan your search BEFORE you access Bibliographic
- Citations Center. Otherwise you may end up with far more information than
- you can use, and a higher bill than you want!
-
- When you begin your search, choose your source from a menu offering Academic
- Journals, Education, Magazines, Medicine, Newspapers, or Trade Journals.
- Once you have chosen, narrow your search by topic, company name, and/or
- year. You also have the option of using Boolean logic to include or exclude
- certain terms.
-
- GEnie will access a remote host computer system and search through its
- database for you. It automatically displays bibliographic citations in
- groups of up to 10.
-
- For instance, a typical record retrieved from a search on the word
- "behavior" would look like this:
-
- Record 1
- 14461357 DIALOG File 88: ACADEMIC INDEX
- Getting help for children in need: a guide to early diagnosis and referral.
- (includes bibliography) (Interview)
- Murray, Wendy
- Instructor (1990) v103 n2 p53(5) Sept, 1993
- SOURCE FILE: MI File 47
- ARTICLE TYPE: Interview
- RECORD DATE: 931002
-
- Hint: Use a capture buffer in your communications software or some other
- method to store the information to your disk, so you don't have to conduct
- the search again later.
-
- May I quote you?
-
- Use Quotations Online (enter M1292 or QUOTATION at any GEnie page prompt) to
- find quotes from authors, politicians, poets, and others throughout history.
- You'll first be prompted to enter words or phrases that are part of a
- popular quote. If you like, you can limit your results to a specific author,
- or search for all the quotes available by a particular person.
-
- You'll get a list of up to 10 quotations; you can display additional
- quotations in groups of up to ten. Each additional group of up to 10 you
- request will result in an additional charge.
-
- Like Bibliographic Citations Center, Quotations Online can be searched with
- Boolean logic to include or exclude topics and authors.
-
- For instance, a search on the term "Brutus" produces records like:
-
- Record 2
- 00010892 DIALOG File 175: QUOTATIONS DATABASE
-
- SHAKESPEARE, WILLIAM 1564-1616
-
- A friend should bear his friend's infirmities,
- But Brutus makes mine greater than they are.
-
- SOURCE/NOTES: JULIUS CAESAR, IV.iii.85
- Oxford Dictionary of Quotations
-
- Use a capture file to grab these as they go by. Check them out later, and
- even import portions of them directly into your school paper. Just credit
- GEnie and Quotations Online in your footnote.
-
- Both Bibliographic Citations Center and Quotations Online are made available
- by Dialog Information Services, Inc., and are offered through GEnie via
- Advanced Research Technologies' ARTIST(R) Gateway System.
-
- You're living in the information age, and with GEnie you can be an
- information ARTIST.
