  24.   Welcome to the world of Hi-Octane, Bullfrogs visceral, high-speed deathchase.
  25. Hi-Octane is all about two things: Speed and Death. The main objective is to 
  26. come first in the race. How you achieve this, however, is entirely up to you.
  27. You will be racing against (initially) three other Hover-vehicles around a 
  28. simple, roughly oval track. This demo features a SINGLE-PLAYER mode and a 
  29. MULTIPLAYER mode. It does not reveal all features of the full game, which 
  30. appears very soon.

  65.  Type DEMO to play. That's all there is to it. When you enter the game, 
  66. choose options to configure your game to any preference you wish, including 
  67. the amount of computer players and the difficulty level.

  69.  If you experience problems with sound, you will have to copy the 
  70. demo to your hard drive. Once installed, enter the directory and type 
  71. "SETSOUND". Configure your sound card, save the settings and exit. 
  72. Type DEMO again to begin.

  78.         The basic premise of Hi-Octane is identical to any other race game:
  79. ..race around the track, and win. It is, however, radically different in  
  80. other areas: 
  81.  
  82.       * Controls: Hi-Octane is NOT a driving simulation. What it is
  83.       is an ultra fast, easy to play, true-3D combat racing game. 
  84.       
  85.       * Speed: Hi-Octane contains a unique Turbo feature. Using this 
  86.       while playing will catapult your vehicle to speeds toppling 400 mph!

  88.       * Combat: Not so much combat as chassis crushing violence! If you find 
  89.       your opponents are insurmountable, BLOW THEIR BONES AWAY!
  90.  
  91.          This demo track is left entirely open to the player. There are no 
  92. time penalties, nor indeed any lap-clocks at all. Just be first to the line 
  93. in lap 10, and then you can consider yourself a truly competent player. 
  94. Similarly, the game is not over once all contestents have completed 10 laps. 
  95. We have tailored it so you can continue playing for as many laps as you wish, 
  96. exploring the track, or entering full-on combat with all the other players!
  97.     The track will also be scattered with power-ups. Collect these to 
  98. charge your initial weapon levels to cause as much damage to your foes 
  99. as possible. If you die, (and you will!) you are not out of the race, but you  
  100. are forced to wait until the track mechanics' ship picks you up, repairs you
  101. and drops you back into the thick of it again. This will lose you a good few
  102. seconds, but this is the price you pay!

  109.         Hi-Octane supports most major joypads including Gravis and Phase 9
  110. Phantom controllers.

  130. * Collect as many power-ups as you can, as the other drivers tend
  131.    to ignore them most of the time. These can give you a major advantage over
  132.    your competitors, so don't be afraid to lose some time over this, as they are  
  133.    by no means perfect and are constantly trying to kill eachother as well 
  134.    as kill you.
  135.  
  136. * All weapons can be fired at any state of movement whether stationary or 
  137.    hurtling down a straight at 400 mph. Your weapons can all be powered-up to 
  138.    spectacular levels, the most crushing being the Full Homing Devestator 
  139.    missiles. Missiles, however, can never be fully accurate at the speeds that  
  140.    Hi-Octanes' vehicles travel, so positioning yourself before you fire is 
  141.    important. Get behind them and bide your time: A square hit with one of these
  142.    powered up missiles is instant death for your enemy.

  144. * If you find that you simply can't trade blows with your enemies, then 
  145.    you may well be able to out-run them. At the starting gate, try to achieve 
  146.    first place before you hit the start line. Have the turbo key held down 
  147.    BEFORE you hit the start line, and DON'T let go until the fist bend looms.
  148.    You should have a good head start and KEEP USING TURBO AS MUCH AS YOU CAN!

  150. * There is a small short cut in the level. Try to find it: You could see 
  151. barriers dissapear before your eyes.
