  15. Registration:
  16.  
  17. This documents all the changes that the Kudo setup makes when registering
  18. Kudo Image Browser:
  19.  
  20. - The installer searches for the Microsoft OLE 2.0 DLLs on your machine. Three 
  21. things can happen as a result of this search:
  22.  
  23.     1) If they are found (as the result of someone having installed 
  24.     another OLE 2.0 compliant application), and they are of the same or 
  25.     a newer version as the copies that Kudo is shipped with, then nothing
  26.     is done.  
  27.  
  28.     2) If they are found but are of an older version than the 
  29.     copies Kudo is shipped with, then the Kudo installer will copy its
  30.     newer versions over the existing ones, wherever it might find them 
  31.     on your machine.
  32.  
  33.     3) If they are not found, Kudo places new copies of all the OLE 2.0 
  34.     DLLs into your windows\system directory.
  35.  
  36. The OLE 2.0 DLLs are functionally an extension to the Windows 3.1 operating 
  37. system, and so are effectively not a part of Kudo at all.  This means that,
  38. once installed, they are available for all applications that support OLE 2.0,
  39. and need not be installed more than once.  Other OLE 2.0 compliant applications
  40. will generally observe this convention, and will not duplicate these files in
  41. their installation if they are already present.  For this reason, if you 
  42. un-install Kudo, it may be risky to remove these files unless you are certain
  43. there are not other applications that rely on them.  The OLE 2.0 DLLs are:
  44.  
  45.     ole2.dll
  46.     ole2conv.dll
  47.     ole2disp.dll
  48.     ole2nls.dll
  49.     ole2prox.dll
  50.     compobj.dll
  51.     storage.dll
  52.  
  53. - An additional DLL, BWCC.DLL is installed following an identical procedure
  54. to the OLE DLLs.  This file fills a support function and is shipped with
  55. many applications.
  56.  
  57. - The Kudo installer determines if it needs to modify AUTOEXEC.BAT.  You will 
  58. be prompted before it modifies the file.  If you agree to modification, the 
  59. line:
  60.     SHARE.EXE /L:500 /F:5100
  61.  
  62. will be added to AUTOEXEC.BAT.  If there is already a line present that loads 
  63. SHARE, then that line will be modified to ensure that the /L and /F options 
  64. are at least as large as the amount that Kudo requires.
  65.  
  66. - The Kudo setup then registers Kudo as an application with Windows, 
  67. and takes care of registering OLE 2.0 on your machine.  Effectively, this 
  68. modifies the registration database, REG.DAT, in your windows directory, and 
  69. indirectly, your WIN.INI file.  It is accomplished by running REGEDIT.EXE
  70. with the files OLE2.REG and KUDO.REG, which are in your CD-Rom Kudo 
  71. directory.  This operation can be repeated manually if REG.DAT ever becomes 
  72. corrupted, see tech note file "REGEDIT.TXT".

  75. Known Registration Problems:
  76.  
  77. Two situations have been observed to cause problems with the setup:
  78.  
  79. 1) Installing to a PC that is configured as a diskless workstation can confuse
  80. the installer as to the whereabouts of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  In this 
  81. situation, the installer generally cannot access your boot drive.  When the
  82. installer attempts to modify your autoexec file, it will probably come 
  83. up with a path to an AUTOEXEC.BAT that doesn't exist, such as A:\AUTOEXEC.BAT.
  84. If this happens, you will need to make the modifications yourself. Select
  85. the option to NOT have the Kudo installer modify your autoexec file, and
  86. then, after the installation is complete, manually add the line:
  87.         <path>\SHARE.EXE /L:500 /F:5100
  88. to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  <path> is the full path to your DOS directory 
  89. (or wherever SHARE.EXE exists).  The /L & /F options are suggested minimums.
  90. If you are already loading SHARE in your autoexec, then you only need to
  91. ensure that you add the command line options to the SHARE statement.  If
  92. the options are already there, and they are larger, then leave them alone.
  93. If they are there but are smaller, then use the values suggested here.
  94. You will need to reboot your computer for this change to take effect.
  95.  
  96. 2) Installing to a network version of Windows can cause problems if the
  97. user does not have write privileges to some of the Windows directories.
  98. The Kudo installer may need to add some DLL's to your current windows\system
  99. directory.  This directory will often be on a networked drive that is read-
  100. only when you are running a network version of Windows.  You will get messages
  101. to the effect of "Can't write to file ... due to read-only protection...", etc.
  102. This indicates that you will need to have the network supervisor run the
  103. installation in supervisor mode to obtain proper write access to the 
  104. necessary directories.

  107. General notes:
  108.  
  109. Quark Place Module
  110. ----------------     
  111. For Quark 3.1.2. and 3.2B Drag & Drop, you must copy the file m_quark.xxt 
  112. (found in the CD-Rom directory where Kudo Image Browser is,  
  113. to your Quark directory for Drag and Drop to work. 
  114.  
  115. Support for Scitex (.CT) files
  116. ------------------------------
  117. The Scitex image format is listed as a supported format in the manual and
  118. online documentation, but is not available at this time.
  119.  
  120.  
  121. Support for Microsoft AVI files and Apple QuickTime movies
  122. ----------------------------------------------------------
  123. By default, Kudo is configured to ignore both video formats that it currently 
  124. supports - Microsoft Audio-Video Interleaved (.AVI) and Apple QuickTime movies
  125. (.MOV).  This is because Kudo requires the AVI and QuickTime drivers to be 
  126. present in order to read the respective file format.  Without the drivers
  127. available, Kudo would generate errors if it encountered an AVI or QuickTime
  128. file.
  129.  
  130. For this release, it is assumed that users wishing to catalog these video 
  131. formats will already have the appropriate drivers installed.  If you have these 
  132. drivers installed, you can simply uncomment the line that designates the 
  133. appropriate Kudo import filter from KUDO.INI (KUDO.INI is a configuration text 
  134. file appearing in the directory in which you installed Kudo). This is how those 
  135. lines appear in the default KUDO.INI file:
  136.  
  137. ;;;;AVI - Microsoft Audio-Video Interleaved=filters\MAVI.FLT,AVI
  138. ;;;;MOV - Apple QuickTime Movie=filters\MMOV.FLT,.MOV
  139.  
  140. Using Windows notepad or any other text editor, simply remove the semi-colons 
  141. (';') that precede the appropriate line in order to enable Kudo to recognize 
  142. that format.  To enable recognition of AVI files for example, uncomment the 
  143. AVI line as follows:

  145. AVI - Microsoft Audio-Video Interleaved=filters\MAVI.FLT,AVI
  146. ;;;;MOV - Apple QuickTime Movie=filters\MMOV.FLT,.MOV

  151. Here is a list of the known problems:
  152.  
  153. - Scrolling of the catalog window continues past the end of the thumbnail display.
  154.  
  155. - The image quality of the thumbnails may be dependent upon the video board in 
  156. use when cataloging.  In particular, catalog quality may be reduced for certain images
  157. if you are running with less than a 256 color video card.
  158.  
  159. - RLE compressed bitmaps are not currently supported.
  160.  
  161. - Selecting a video driver resolution with large fonts, may force text into the 
  162. thumbnail borders.
  163.  
  164. - The "Info" dialogue does not repaint itself after being minimized.
  165.  
  166. - Partial covering and uncovering of the "Notes"  area of a  selected thumbnail, 
  167. will sometimes gray the uncovered portion of the "Notes" area.  
  168.  
  169. - When multiple catalogs are tiled, the status bar does not correctly display the 
  170. number of images found.
  171.  
  172. - The "Info" dialogue window stays on top even when other applications are overlaying 
  173. Kudo.
  174.  
  175. - When a user attempts to open a catalog that is in use by another user,  the wrong 
  176. message is displayed.  The message "File is not a Kudo Catalog. . ." is displayed 
  177. instead of the "Catalog in use. . ." message.

  179. - When double clicking a thumbnail that is associated with a program that no longer 
  180. exists or is not available, the message "WinExec failed error code=2"  is displayed 
  181. instead of a more meaningful message.
