1. A generic word for poetry written in strict form, with rhyming line endings.
2. One section of such a poem or of a song, whose form is self- contained. Each verse (or stanza) of the song or poem will be structurally identical with different words.
3. The first part of a song or hymn, sung by a soloist or solo ensemble, before the chorus which is sung by the full choir and perhaps the congregation.
