Originally meant a place for confining animals. Came to mean a specific place or position and, eventually, a seat of importance or dignity. In the theatre or opera house the stalls are now the rows of seats set directly in front of the orchestra pit. The fixed rows of seats in the choir of a church are also known as stalls, or choir stalls.
