from “requiescere” - to rest. The Requiem occurs at the beginning of the opening chant of the Christian Mass for the dead. “Requiem æternam dona eis, Domine” - eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord”. It became a term for a Mass said or sung for the souls of the dead.
