In the spoken theatre, this r├┤le is usually adopted by the deputy stage manager, who, if the cast forget their lines, will discretely read the next cue to them from the prompt corner. In opera, however, the r├┤le is often a more active one. The prompter may be calling the initial (cue-) words of every phrase to soloists and chorus, just before they have to sing them. He or she then conducts the cast in for each of these cues.
