For the singer, projection has two facets. 1. The process of producing a loud enough sound to reach the audience. 2. The less definable quality of making available to that audience all the interpretative elements of performance. Sometimes singers can be extremely effective when rehearsing in a small room, but lack the ability to project the subtleties over the footlights (an expression still used, though few opera houses still have them).
