The earliest form of vocal music believed to have been used in the Christian church. It consists of melodies composed in early modes and in free rhythm defined by accentuating particular words. It was sung solo or in unison. It was systematised in the 4th and 6th centuries by Saint Ambrose and Saint Gregory the Great. See also Gregorian chant.
