Phonemes are to words as atoms are to molecules. The phoneme is the smallest usefully identifiable segment of sound in a word, whether it be a vowel or a consonant. The word can also be applied to music, to define the smallest identifiable unit of sound- a single note or chord, for example. See also semantics.
