The English composer, Benjamin Britten, made friends with Shostakovich. "What do you think of Puccini?" asked Shostakovich. "His operas are dreadful." replied Britten. "Oh, but you're wrong," said the Russian, "he wrote marvellous operas. The music was dreadful."
