On January 28, 1936, an article about Shostakovich's opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk appeared in the Russian paper Pravda. It was headed ΓÇ£Muddle instead of MusicΓÇ¥, and expressed Stalin's personal opinion of the work. The opera was withdrawn immediately and concerts were subsequently announced in the newspaper as " a concert by enemy of the people Shostakovich".
