The composer, Bart├│k, collecting folksongs in Turkey, came upon a tribe whose lullabies he wanted to record. He was then told that the women never sang in front of men, not even their husbands. He settled for recording the male voices instead noting that "it was obvious that these men never lulled their babies to sleep, with or without singing."
