Out shopping, Dame Nellie Melba saw a perfume called MELBA, tried it and hated it. Not recognising her, the assistant announced that authorisation to use the famous soprano's name hadn't been sought because, "It's actually Mrs. Armstrong, so we've as much right to use Melba as she has." It was actually Helen Porter Mitchell, but the singer conceded the point.
