A group of nineteenth century music bores were gathered around the Spanish mezzo soprano, Maria Malibran, hoping to please her by deriding English music. To hushed attention, she began to sing in Italian, starting slowly and ending with great, dramatic vigour. Amidst wild applause, she sang it again, this time in the original language and in strict tempo, "Polly, put the kettle on, we'll all have tea!"
