In 1867, the soprano Christine Nilsson made her London début at Her Majesty's Theatre in London. The manager paid twenty-four hard-handed Thames watermen a shilling for every time they could get the curtain to rise after the first Act. Applauding wildly, they managed ten curtain calls and the début was the talk of London.
