In 1831, the soprano Maria Malibran appeared in the title-r├┤le in Rossini's Otello. Opposite her was the vastly overweight soprano, Wilhelmine Schroeder-Devrient. Watching her billowing across the stage, the composer Chopin declared that Otello seemed in more danger of being smothered than Desdemona of being strangled.
