The Italian tenor Caruso was famous for his eating habits. Fans would flock to watch at his favourite restaurant where, unaware of his audience, he frequently lunched on spaghetti. To the admiration of his devotees, he would plunge a fork into the pasta and twist it round till the plate was empty. One gulp and it was gone. Ten plates at a meal were not unusual.
