This word has several usages in poetry and music. For the singer, it refers in its basic sense to the rhythm to which the words of a song have been set. In music metre sometimes refers to the basic pulse of accented beats, in contrast with rhythm which is taken to mean the whole structure of accented and unaccented beats.
