Occupying the chest cavity, the lungs are made up of bronchi and bronchioles, whose main function is to transmit oxygen into the blood stream. They operate as a semi-automatic bellows, controlled by the diaphragm, and in substance are akin to a natural sponge. Their secondary function in most mammals and birds, is to control the flow of exhaled breath as it passes through the vocal mechanism.
