Historically the term has been applied to vocal music of various kinds. In the eighteenth century in England, it came to refer to a specific type of vocal composition for three or more solo voices without accompaniment. This form of glee abounds in melody, is generally cheerful, and boasts refined contrapuntal writing. Different melodies move along at the same time in the different parts.
