An early Italian name for the pianoforte. Still used in English to describe pianos of the late eighteenth century, which still had something of the jangly tonal qualities of plucked keyboard instruments like the harpsichord. Such early pianos are occasionally used in authentic performances of, for example, Mozart operas, to play continuo.
