Maestro de Fabritiis, the Italian conductor and composer, was born in Rome in 1902. He studied at the Rome Conservatory, and made his conducting début at the Teatro Adriano in Rome in 1920. After a period conducting at Salerno, he was appointed Artistic Secretary at the Teatro dell’Opera, Rome (1932/43). He conducted there frequently and inaugurated the Summer Opera Seasons at the Baths of Caracalla in Rome conducting Toti dal Monte and Beniamino Gigli in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor.
He conducted Gigli in many operas in Europe and America. He also conducted the famous Gigli recordings of GiordanoΓÇÖs Andrea Chenier and PucciniΓÇÖs Tosca and Madam Butterfly.
He first conducted in Britain at the Edinburgh Festival in 1963 (CileaΓÇÖs Adriana Lecouvreur) and conducted VerdiΓÇÖs Simone Boccanegra at Covent Garden in 1965. He died in Rome in 1982.
