Simon Estes made his début with the Deutsche Oper Berlin over twenty-five years ago. Since then he has become one of the world's most renowned bass-baritones. He has performed in opera houses all over the world, including The Metropolitan Opera, New York, La Scala, Milan, The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, The Paris Opera, Gran Teatre del Lucue, Barcelona, The State operas of Hamburg, Münich, Vienna and Zürich, and all the major opera houses of the USA. He also appears regularly at the Bayreuth and Glyndebourne festivals.
He is a noted recitalist and orchestral soloist, singing under the baton of conductors such as Carlo Maria Giulini, Seiji Ozawa, Matislav Rostropovich and Horst Stein. His recordings are found on the Auvidis, Decca, Deutsche Gramophone, Deutsche Schallplatten, EMI, Phillips Classics and Sony Classical labels.
He was born in Centerville, Iowa and studied at the University of Iowa and the Julliard School. Since 1986 he has himself been a distinguished member of the Julliard faculty, and he gives masterclasses throughout the United States.
He has established several Scholarship funds and foundations, including an International Foundation, which provides financial support for the health and education of needy and underprivileged children.
He is a passionate believer in the power of song to cross boundaries and offer a common ground for people of every colour, creed and race.
