Thin membrane stretched across the innermost end of the external ear passage. It is set vibrating in sympathy with sound waves channelled into the ear. A string of three tiny bones, the hammer, the anvil and the stirrup, connect the eardrum across the cavity of the middle-ear, and transmit sounds, to a second membrane which seals the outer end of the cochlea.
