Born in the United States of America, in Washington D.C., she won a series of prestigious awards as a student. In 1983 she made her European dÈbut, as Oscar in Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera, with Hamburg Opera. She repeated the role a year later performing with Pavarotti at the Chicago Lyric Opera.
In 1987 she made her dÈbut at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, singing the role of Pousette in a new production of Massenet's Manon. Her career since then has included both operatic and recital work.
