Carlo Bergonzi was born near Parma in Italy in 1924. He studied at the Boito Conservatory, Parma and started his career as a baritone. He later re-studied and became one of the finest spinto tenors of the post war era.
Arguably, he was the greatest Verdi stylist of the last 50 years.
