The Greek philosopher Aristotle (384- 322 B.C.) was a pupil of Plato, though he was less interested than his master in pure mathematics. After Plato's death, he spent some time as tutor to the young Alexander the Great, before founding his own school at Athens.
Here he collected manuscripts, creating the prototype of all the great libraries of antiquity. He also gathered a museum of objects to illustrate his lectures, particularly those on zoology, which was one of his subjects.
His own interest in music and song was probably inspired by that of Plato. In his school at Athens he encouraged his adult students in music research. He also believed strongly in the place of both the theory and performance of music in basic education.
