  44. This version is primarily intended for users of Microsoft(R) Windows(R)
  45. 3.1/3.11, Windows for Workgroups 3.1/3.11, and Windows NT(R) 3.51 who are 
  46. connected to a local area network (LAN) or who have existing Internet 
  47. connections (people who have an existing TCP/IP connection, a dialer, and an 
  48. account with an Internet service provider).
  49.  
  50. Note that this version is a 16-bit program and therefore you do not need
  51. to have Win32s(R) installed on your computer.
  52.  
  53. If you are using Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT(R) 4.0, you can download 
  54. a version designed and optimized for these platforms at:

  57. This product enables you to browse and view HTML documents on the network, 
  58. in addition to documents on the World Wide Web or Internet, provided your
  59. network is connected to the Internet or provided you have an existing TCP/IP
  60. connection. Other services, such as Gopher, FTP, and NNTP news support, are
  61. also available.

  76. - A personal computer, 386 processor or higher
  77. - Microsoft Windows 3.1 or 3.11 or 
  78.   Microsoft Windows for Workgroups 3.1 or 3.11
  79.   or Microsoft Windows NT 3.51
  80. - At least 4 megabytes (MB) of memory
  81. - A VGA monitor or better
  82. - A mouse
  83. - A modem with a speed of at least 9600 or a LAN 
  84.   connection
  85. - TCP/IP Stack & Dialer, or configured connection for Windows NT 3.51

  87. Important 
  88.   A TCP/IP network protocol stack and a dialer (often referred to as
  89.   Winsock.dll) are required to access the Internet through an Internet
  90.   service provider (ISP). As mentioned above, this version of Internet
  91.   Explorer requires that these components be installed before running
  92.   Internet Explorer.

  94. If you are accessing the Internet through a LAN or just browsing your
  95. internal network (intranet), your network administrator can provide you
  96. with the appropriate version of Winsock.dll.

  100. INSTALLING MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER
  101. --------------------------------------
  102.  
  103. Installing from the Internet
  104. ----------------------------
  105.  
  106. To install Microsoft Internet Explorer from the Internet, carry out 
  107. the following procedure.
  108.  
  109. Important
  110. For the 40-bit version of Internet Explorer, the name of the download 
  111. file is Dlmin30d.exe. For the 40-bit WIndows NT version, the file name 
  112. is MinNT30d.exe. For the 128-bit version, you determine the file name
  113. at the time you download it. 
  114.  
  115. 1. Create a temporary directory on your computer.
  116. 2. Choose to download Microsoft Internet Explorer from the Internet, 
  117.    and save the download file to the temporary directory.
  118. 3. In File Manager, run the download file to extract the program files.
  119. 4. Read the instructions below for LAN installations and for installing
  120.    with existing TCP/IP connections.
  121. 5. In File Manager, run Setup.exe. Setup installs files in the 
  122.    directory you specify.
  123.  
  124.    Note
  125.    If you are upgrading to a newer version of Internet Explorer and
  126.    choose to install the program in a different directory from your
  127.    original version, please refer to the following section, "Upgrading 
  128.    over Earlier Versions," for further instructions.
  129.  
  130. 6. If you want, you can delete the temporary directory you created.
  131. 7. Run Internet Explorer.
  132.  
  133.  
  134. Upgrading over Earlier Versions
  135. When upgrading to a newer version of Internet Explorer, you can choose to
  136. install the program into the same directory as your previous version 
  137. or establish another directory. If you choose the former, your previous 
  138. dialer settings and connection(s) will be preserved. However, if you choose
  139. the latter, you must do the following in order to use your pre-existing 
  140. dialer settings and connection(s):
  141.  
  142.   1. If you install to a new directory, but keep your existing 
  143.      program group, you must change the properties of any dialer 
  144.      program item(s) you previously created so that the Command Line
  145.      and Working Directory settings point to the appropriate directories.
  146.      (Note that the New Connections program item does not need to be
  147.      modified.) You do this by clicking the dialer program item, choosing
  148.      Properties from the File menu, and replacing all references to the
  149.      existing directory with the name of new directory. For example, if
  150.      you install an upgrade of Internet Explorer to a new directory named
  151.      NEWEXPL, the following change would be required:
  152.  
  153.     Command Line: C:\IEXPLORE\iedial.exe C:\IEXPLORE\CON0000.CON
  154.     Working Directory: C:\IEXPLORE
  155.  
  156.     Changes to:
  157.  
  158.     Command Line: C:\NEWEXPL\iedial.exe C:\NEWEXPL\CON0000.CON
  159.     Working Directory: C:\NEWEXPL
  160.  
  161.   2. Using File Manager, copy all files with the extension .con
  162.      from the previous directory to the new created directory.
  163.  
  164.   3. If during the upgrade you choose to use a new program group,
  165.      just follow step 2 and copy the old dialer program items to the new 
  166.      program group. Repeat step 1 to change the Command Line and Working
  167.      Directory settings.
  168.  
  169.  
  170. Upgrading over Versions 1.5 and 1.6 Beta
  171. If you are upgrading from the version 1.5 or version 1.6 beta, please 
  172. read the following special notes.
  173.  
  174. - The format of Iexplore.ini has changed, so Setup will make a backup
  175.   copy of your current Iexplore.ini file to a file called Ie16ini.sav.
  176. - You will need to reapply any user-selectable settings, such as proxy 
  177.   servers, in the new version.               
  178. - Your Favorites and History lists will be preserved.
  179. - Win32s is not required for this version, so if you installed Win32s 
  180.   specifically to run the version 1.6 beta, then you can remove it from
  181.   your system. Please refer to the following URL for instructions on 
  182.   removing Win32s from your system:

  186. LAN Installations
  187. -----------------
  188.  
  189. After completing the steps outlined above, you should be ready to use 
  190. Microsoft Internet Explorer over your LAN. You will be able to use 
  191. Internet Explorer to browse the Internet. (If you are not sure whether 
  192. you currently have access, consult your network administrator.)
  193.  
  194. If you have access, your LAN administrator should provide you with 
  195. proxy servers that also can be used.
  196.  
  197. To install Internet Explorer, make sure you have the TCP/IP protocol 
  198. installed.
  199.  
  200. Proxy servers can also be used, provided they are CERN compliant.
  201.  
  202. To enable use of a proxy server:
  203.  
  204. 1. On the View menu, click Options.
  205. 2. On the Connection tab, select the check box under Proxy
  206.    Server, and then click Settings. 
  207. 3. In the Proxy Settings dialog box, type the address of your 
  208.    proxy server and change any other necessary settings.

  211. Running on a Remote Installation
  212. --------------------------------
  213.  
  214. If you will be running Internet Explorer on a diskless workstation:
  215.  
  216. 1. Install Internet Explorer on the server.
  217. 2. Copy Iexplore.ini to the client Windows directory.
  218.  
  219.  
  220. If you will be sharing a remote installation from a client computer
  221. running Windows 3.1:
  222.  
  223. 1. The following files must be in the client computer's 
  224.    Windows\System directory:
  225.  
  226.      Comctlie.dll
  227.      Vscrpt16.dll
  228.      Jscrpt16.dll
  229.      Secur16.dll
  230.      Security.dll
  231.      Msapsp16.dll
  232.      Msnath16.dll

  237.    and optionally the following RealAudio files:

  245. 2. The client computer must have OLE 2.03 or higher installed.
  246.    Copying the OLE files will not properly update the system.
  247. 3. The file Iexplore.ini should be on the client computer.
  248.

  250. Using Third-Party Telnet Helper Applications
  251. ----------------------------------------------
  252.  
  253. To configure Internet Explorer to use a Telnet helper application,
  254. open Iexplore.ini and locate the [Helpers] section. Remove the 
  255. semicolon (;) from in front of the telnet= line, and type the path to 
  256. the telnet application. For example:
  257.  
  258.   [helpers]
  259.   telnet=c:\windows\telnet.exe %s
  260.  
  261.  
  262. Installation with Existing TCP/IP Connections and ISP Accounts
  263. --------------------------------------------------------------
  264.  
  265. In general, all that is required is that you configure the PATH command 
  266. in your Autoexec.bat file so that Microsoft Internet Explorer can find 
  267. the Winsock.dll file you are using to connect to the Internet. For 
  268. example, if your Winsock.dll file is in the directory C:\Connect, add
  269. a line directly under your current PATH command that reads:
  270.   PATH=%PATH%;C:\CONNECT
  271.  
  272. If you have multiple Winsock.dll files, please make sure that the Winsock
  273. file you choose to use comes first in the PATH command or is located in the
  274. directory where your browser files reside.
  275.  
  276. Following are procedures for installing Microsoft Internet Explorer over some
  277. common Internet access products. Other packages available include FTP
  278. Software, Network TeleSystems, and shareware from Trumpet Software
  279. (http://www.trumpet.com.au/wsk/winsock.htm).
  280.  
  281.  
  282.    Internet Chameleon 4.5
  283.    ----------------------
  284.  
  285. 1. Install Microsoft Internet Explorer to the suggested default 
  286.    directory (C:\Iexplore).
  287. 2. Make sure that the Internet Chameleon directory is in your path. 
  288.    If it is not, add it to the PATH statement in your Autoexec.bat 
  289.    file, and then restart your computer.
  290. 3. Run the Internet Chameleon dialer program (from the Custom icon).
  291. 4. Select the line corresponding to your current Internet service 
  292.    provider, and make sure that the Dial On Demand command on the 
  293.    Setup menu has a check mark by it. This makes the dialer 
  294.    program run when Internet Explorer tries to connect to the Internet.
  295. 5. Start Internet Explorer by double-clicking the Internet Explorer icon 
  296.    in the Microsoft Internet Explorer group in Program Manager.
  297.  
  298. If you have configured the Chameleon dialer to dial on demand, an Internet
  299. connection is made when you first enter an Internet address in Internet
  300. Explorer.
  301.  
  302. If you have not configured the Chameleon dialer to dial on demand, you need
  303. to start that program before you start Internet Explorer.
  304.  
  305.  
  306.    Netscape Navigator 1.2 Personal Edition
  307.    ---------------------------------------
  308.  
  309. 1. Install Microsoft Internet Explorer to the directory that contains 
  310.    your Netscape Navigator files. For example, if you installed the 
  311.    Netscape browser in the default directory (C:\Netscape), place the 
  312.    Internet Explorer files in the same location.
  313. 2. Run Internet Explorer.
  314.  
  315.  
  316.    Other Internet Dialer Packages
  317.    ------------------------------
  318.  
  319. 1. Install Microsoft Internet Explorer to the suggested default directory.
  320. 2. Make sure that the Internet dialer directory is in your path. 
  321.    If it is not, add it to the PATH statement in your Autoexec.bat 
  322.    file, and then restart your computer.
  323. 3. Run your existing Internet dialer program.
  324. 4. Choose to enable dial on demand (if your dialer supports this option). 
  325.    This makes the dialer program run when Internet Explorer tries 
  326.    to connect to the Internet.
  327. 5. Start Internet Explorer by double-clicking the Internet Explorer icon 
  328.    in the Microsoft Internet Explorer group in Program Manager.
  329.  
  330. If you have configured the dialer to dial on demand, an Internet connection
  331. is made when you first enter an Internet address in Internet Explorer.
  332.  
  333. If you have not configured the dialer to dial on demand, you need to start 
  334. that program before you start Internet Explorer.
  335.  
  336.  
  337. Making a Backup Copy of the Software
  338. ------------------------------------
  339.  
  340. 1. Make sure that you have two floppy disks (3.5" disks with 1.44 
  341.    MB capacity).
  342. 2. After you have downloaded the software and have run the download file
  343.    (see "Installing from the Internet" earlier in this file) your temporary
  344.    directory contains all the files that you need to make disks.
  345. 3. Copy the file Iew31_2.cab on your disk number 2.
  346. 4. Copy the following files on your disk number 1.
  347.     Files.inf
  348.     Readme.txt
  349.     Iew31_1.cab
  350.     Setup.exe
  351.     Install.lst
  352.     License.txt
  353.     Install.bin
  354.         Setup.ini

  356.  
  357. ---------------------
  358. KNOWN ISSUES AND BUGS
  359. ---------------------
  360.  
  361. * No inline video.
  362. * No Internet shortcuts.
  363. * You cannot open another instance of Internet Explorer by double-clicking
  364.   an .htm file in File Manager or double-clicking the Internet Explorer icon
  365.   in Program Manager. To open a new instance of Internet Explorer, choose
  366.   New Window from the File menu.
  367. * If you have voice messages waiting on your phone line (rapid beeps), our 
  368.   Dialer fails to dial out on the line. This can be remedied (for Hayes-
  369.   compatible modems only) if, in the file Modems2.ini, at the end of the line
  370.   for the InitString setting, you set "blind dialing" by typing:
  371.     S6=5
  372. * Internet Explorer might have difficulty loading a very large number of
  373.   newsgroups (>16000). If your news server has a large number of newsgroups,
  374.   you should use a dedicated newsreader to browse the groups.
  375. * After upgrading to version 3.0a, if you run an earlier version, you might
  376.   get a dialog box stating "Could not :Load Entry Point in Security Protocol
  377.   Module: Proxy_Basic=Proxy_basic_Load,basic.dll."  Just click OK and
  378.   continue or copy the Basic.dll from the 3.0a installation over the Basic.dll
  379.   in the previous installation.
  380. * You might experience problems running some plug-ins.  We are working with
  381.   several vendors to resolve these issues.
  382. * If you are using an older phone system or hardware, or if you are 
  383.   installing a "generic" modem, the existing initialization settings for 
  384.   the modem might not be sufficient. If you have problems with the modem, 
  385.   you may need to modify the Modems2.ini file in order to change the 
  386.   initialization settings.  Use Notepad or another text editor to open the 
  387.   file, and then, in the modems section, locate the line for the modem, and 
  388.   modify the INIT line as needed.
  389. * Pressing the TAB key does not select the Address bar as in previous 
  390.   versions.
  391. * If you are running Windows NT 3.51, the background of the Font Preview 
  392.   box (on the Font tab in the Internet Mail Options dialog box) will 
  393.   sometimes change colors. In some cases, this color may be very dark, 
  394.   making it impossible to see the font being previewed. It is, however, 
  395.   still possible to change the font. Restarting your computer a few times 
  396.   may solve the color problem.
