  1.                     The HTML Reference Library v2.2

  4.   Please Note : This version of the HTML Reference Library is the 
  5.   Windows95 specific version.  It may run if you have Win32s
  6.   (specifically WinHlp32.exe) installed, but I can't guarantee it.
  7.   For the Win3.x version, please download htmlib22.zip instead.

  9.   Welcome to the HTML Reference Library, your one-stop, on-line guide
  10. to HTML mark-up elements, their uses, meaning and syntax.

  12.   While this document is, at the time of release, up-to-date with all
  13. HTML elements that are currently supported by the most common browsers,
  14. I make no promises that it will remain current in say, 6 months.  
  15. All I can say is that as new elements are supported, or when the 
  16. official HTML level 3.0 spec. is determined, it will be included 
  17. in the reference.

  19.   What's new in this version?
  20.   ---------------------------
  21.   Users are recommended to check the 'What's New in this Version'
  22. section of the Library to see what's new as there is too much to
  23. mention here.  Also, a major change is the licence terms that the
  24. HTML Reference Library is subject to.  Please read either
  25. LICENCE.TXT, or the Licence topic in the Library itself
  26.   The Colour Wizard is included within this release of the HTMLib.
  27. This allows the user to view the effect of changing the colour scheme
  28. without constantly editing a file and re-loading the browser.  It is
  29. believed to be the only Colour Wizard type application that expressly
  30. supports all 140 Netscape colour names.  Also with full context
  31. sensitive pop-up help.  (Click the '?' button and click any area
  32. of the App window for help)

  34.   Notification of future releases
  35.   -------------------------------
  36.   If you heard of this release from a posting to one of the Usenet 
  37. newsgroups, but thought you were on the mailing list, it will be because
  38. your address was incorrect at the time of posting the release note.
  39. When this happens, I delete the address, so as to minimise 'bounce back'
  40. messages.  Please contact me again, with the correct address if you wish 
  41. to be on the mailing list.

  62.   The first site is the primary distribution site.  Files kept there 
  63. are updated by me personally.  The other sites are 'mirror' sites, and 
  64. may lag a few days in holding the actual file after release notes have 
  65. been issued.  If you are having trouble with the swan.ac.uk site, 
  66. please try one of the others before mailing me.

  68.   To install :
  69.   ------------
  70.   1) Expand the downloaded archive, and run SETUP.EXE  This will start
  71.      the installation procedure, and install the HTMLib, together with
  72.      the new Colour Wizard and all necessary support files.  You are
  73.      encouraged to close down all applications before installing this
  74.      version of the HTMLib and delete any previous installations.  The
  75.      installation routine will create a Start menu item for the
  76.      HTMLib automatically.  It is also possible for this version of
  77.      the HTMLib to be uninstalled, through the Control Panel ->
  78.      Add/Remove programs.
  79.   2) DO NOT DELETE THE .CNT file or the file HELPHELP.DLL that is
  80.      copied to the Windows\System directory.  These are required
  81.      for the proper functioning of this version of the HTMLib.

  95.           Added support for various new Internet Explorer-isms.  Added

  97.           now displayed in a separate secondary window, allowing it to
  98.           be kept open longer.  Updated some information concerning
  99.           frames, HotJava and VRML embedding in HTML documents

  101.           Added support for MS Internet Explorer 2.0/Netscape 2.0/Mosaic
  102.           2.0 extras.  i.e. in-line video and sound, marquee text, frames
  103.           <DIV>, table alignment and colouring, font colouring and the
  104.           inclusion of HotJava applets.  A new 'New in this Version' 
  105.           section was added to the contents page to allow quick 
  106.           jumping to new topics.  Many typos/dead links/formatting 
  107.           problems sorted out.

  109.           Added support for MS Internet Explorer specific attributes to
  110.           the <FONT ...> element and <IMG ...> element, allowing control
  111.           over the font type and colour, and client side image maps.

  113.           Added support for <big>,<small>,<sub>,<sup>,<u> and <strike> 
  114.           elements.  Re-arranged several sections.  No more Netscape 
  115.           concerns sections.  This was done because it was becoming 
  116.           increasingly confusing keeping up with elements that were 
  117.           Netscape specific.  Most browsers are implementing Netscapisms 
  118.           anyway, so I felt it would be wise to link all attributes under 
  119.           the same element together, so that future editing would be easier.
  120.           Icon not provided in archive.  Two reasons why.  1) It was a 
  121.           crap icon anyway, 2) Some of you will have it (it came with 
  122.           Visual Basic 3 Prof), or are probably using the default yellow '?'.
