Introduction
This file summarizes the steps for upgrading your system and networking software and for installing AppleShare IP 5.0.2. For detailed instructions, see the AppleShare IP 5.0 Administrator’s Manual that came with your AppleShare IP 5.0.2 software. An electronic version of the AppleShare IP 5.0 Administrator’s Manual is available in the AppleShare Electronic Library folder on the AppleShare IP 5.0.2 CD-ROM disc. (To view this document, Adobe Acrobat™ Reader must be installed on your computer.)

Upgrading System and Networking Software
Follow the steps in this section to upgrade your system software to MacOS 8.0.
Note: If your computer is configured for MacTCP, open the MacTCP control panel and write down your computer’s IP address, as well as the IP address of your router (labeled Gateway Address) and domain name servers.
1. If necessary, upgrade your computer to MacOS 8.0 with OpenDoc 1.2. To install MacOS 8.0, insert the Mac OS 8.0 CD-ROM disc into the CD-ROM drive. Open the Startup Disks control panel and select the Mac OS 8.0 CD-ROM disc as the startup disk. Restart your computer. When your computer restarts, open the Mac OS 8.0 CD-ROM disc icon, double-click the Install Mac OS icon, and follow the instructions. The Easy Install procedure automatically installs OpenDoc 1.2. If you use the Custom Install procedure, be sure to install OpenDoc 1.2 and OpenDoc Essentials. Note that you can use the Install Mac OS application to upgrade an existing System Folder or to create a new System Folder.
2. If necessary, activate Open Transport. On NuBus™-based computers, you’ll need to make Open Transport active by using the Network Software Selector utility in the Apple Extras folder.
3. Open the Chooser and make sure that AppleTalk is active.
4. If you plan to take advantage of AppleShare IP’s TCP-based services, make sure that the TCP/IP control panel is set up with your IP address, your router’s IP address, and the IP addresses of your domain name servers.
Installing AppleShare IP 5.0.2
Follow these steps to install AppleShare IP 5.0.2:
1. Insert the AppleShare IP 5.0.2 CD-ROM disc in the CD-ROM drive.
2. If necessary, double-click the AppleShare IP 5.0.2 CD-ROM disc icon.
3. Double-click the AppleShare IP 5.0.2 Installer and follow the instructions. At the end of the installation, restart your computer.
Setting Up AppleShare IP 5.0.2
1. When you restart your computer after completing the installation of AppleShare IP 5.0.2, you will see an alert dialog box that instructs you to enter or verify the Owner name and password in the Sharing Setup control panel if you did a clean installation of system software. The Sharing Setup control panel is opened for you. Close the Sharing Setup control panel when you have entered or verified your Owner name and password. You will use the name and password to access the AppleShare IP administration programs.
Note: If you used the Install Mac OS application to create a new System Folder on a computer that has previously run a version of AppleShare or Macintosh file sharing, open the Preferences folder in the new System Folder and drag the Users & Groups Data File to the Trash. Then open the Preferences folder in the old System Folder and drag the Users & Groups Data File to the Preferences folder in the new System Folder. Restart your computer.
2. Open the AppleShare IP 5.0 folder on your startup disk and double-click the AppleShare IP Easy Setup icon. If you’ve entered an IP address for your computer in the TCP/IP control panel, AppleShare IP Easy Setup allows you to choose between a Normal and a Custom installation. Choose Normal if DNS service is already available on your network. Choose Custom if you want AppleShare IP Easy Setup to set up a simple MacDNS configuration on your computer. If you haven’t entered an IP address for your computer in the TCP/IP control panel, click the AppleTalk button when AppleShare IP Easy Setup displays the AppleTalk button and the “TCP and AppleTalk” button.
3. When AppleShare IP Easy Setup asks you to enter your serial number, enter the serial number that came with your AppleShare IP 5.0.2 software. If you are upgrading from a previous version of AppleShare, AppleShare IP Easy Setup displays your old serial number for you.
4. AppleShare IP Easy Setup can be used to start each AppleShare IP server that’s installed on your computer and the AppleShare IP Manager. The AppleShare IP Manager provides status information and allows you to start each of the AppleShare IP administration programs.
