• Place the "HyperStudio Plug-in" file in your "Plug-ins" folder of the Netscape 4.0 or Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 (or later recommended) application.
• Do not change the name of the HyperStudio Plug-in file.
• Any stacks you create need to have a ".stk" extension on the file name (i.e. "myhomepg.stk").
• The Windows Plug-in comes in two versions. There is a Windows 3.1 (16-bit) and a Windows 95 (32-bit) version. You must use the version of the Plug-in which matches your Internet Browser (16 or 32 bit). The Windows version of the Plug-in works with either Netscape or Microsoft's Internet Explorer.
________
To create an Internet ready stack:
1) Save your stack using an 8-character name that has no spaces, and ends with the characters ".stk". for Windows compatibility.
Note: You may get a dialog box advising you of stack incompatibilities with HyperStudio for Windows. This my be due to folder or file names that do not conform to Windows naming conventions. If there are compressed sounds in your stack, and your stack will be accessed by Windows as well as Mac browsers, you need to uncompress those sounds.
2) Use the default name supplied by the Export Webpage Extra, or enter your own, and save the file to the same folder as the stack saved in step 1.
3) To test your stack, open Netscape and use "Open File" from the Netscape's file menu to open the HTML file saved in step 2. If the Netscape window is too small, you may have to resize it to see all of your stack.
NOTE: For this to work, you must have placed the "HyperStudio Plug-in" file in your Netscape Plug-ins folder.
To have your stack actually available over Internet, you will have to move your stack and the accompanying HTML file to your Internet server.
Special Considerations:
• Any NBA’s other than the ones included in the HyperStudio Plug-In will have to be made available to your potential viewers as Stuffit-compressed file (.Sit). The user should be instructed to create a folder called "NBAs & Extras" within their Netscape Plug-In folder, and to place the uncompressed NBA file in this folder. When the stack is downloaded by a browser, the HyperStudio Plug-in automatically looks for any NBA’s used by the stack in the NBAs & Extras folder. The following NBA’s are included in the Macintosh HyperStudio Plug-In:
Auto Record Back To Browse
Blabber Mouth Blabber Mouth II
Button Runner CD Play
Clear Dirty Flag Get Event
Ghost Writer Hide Cursor
Hide Show I’m a Home Stack
Is Application Running Menu Chooser
Multiple HideShow Net Page
Obscure Cursor Pause
Print Text Print Card
Quit Quit Another
Roll Credits Run Apple Script
Slide Show Speech Recognition
Star Field Text Mover
The Windows HyperStudio Plug-In will only work with those NBA's which are currently shipping with the Windows version of the program. When creating stacks for use in both the Macintosh and Windows Internet Browsers, users must be careful to use only those NBAs which are currently available on both platforms (listed in bold print above).
The following cross-platform NBAs are not included in the current Macintosh HyperStudio Plugin:
*Key Mapper
*Movie Controller
*Picture Show
• Currently you may use only one stack per web page. The ability to have multiple stacks open at once is currently in development.
• Currently the Fade to Black and Fade to White transitions don’t work correctly, but will be corrected in a future release.
________
Connecting to other URLs from within a stack:
If you want to create buttons or hypertext in your stack that, when clicked on, point your browser to another URL, use the Netpage NBA to specify the target URL.
NOTE: HyperText is not available in HyperStudio for Windows version 1.0.5 or earlier. However, this feature should be available by late summer.
________
Different ways of using HyperStudio in a web page:
Stand-alone page. If you just use the HTML exported from HyperStudio and your stack, this can serve as your entire web page. In this case, the HTML code exported by the Export Webpage Extra is the only HTML file you will need. An example of this in included in this folder under the name "ref.stk.html"
Including a HyperStudio stack within a larger HTML document. In this case, the example is a school home page ("GreenBrown.html"). A comparison document of the original HTML home page (GreenOrig.html) is included.
Adding multimedia special effects to a web page. The last example, GreenAnim.HTML, shows how to use a stack for special effects. The viewer may not even be aware that a HyperStudio "stack" or card is embedded in the page. Remember, HyperStudio stacks can be any height and width, so if you want a page with just a little animated figure, or your school logo that transforms to a picture of a student, HyperStudio is a great way to do this!
________
Some Internet stack design tips:
• Keep an eye on your stack size. Use simple, solid colors in your backgrounds and graphics, and minimize the use of large photographs to increase the speed with which your stacks are downloaded. Embedded sounds also add significantly to the size of a stack.
• Where possible, link several stacks together on your server, rather than one giant one. This way, users will download cards on an as-needed basis.
________
Changing the HTML code exported by the Export Webpage Extra.
This section is for Advanced Users only: If you would like to experiment with different HTML scripts generated by the Export Webpage Extra, use ResEdit to modify the Text Resource that is built into this Extra. HyperStudio automatically inserts the stack name and stack size into the template HTML script in the Text Resource. You may make any further additions you like to this to create more sophisticated HTML
________
To Install the Export Webpage Extra:
1) Run HyperStudio.
2) Choose "Extra Manager" from the Extras menu. If you're using the multiple-user version of HyperStudio (3.1.Xn), you'll get a dialog box telling you that HyperStudio is set up for sharing, and must be re-run if you want to use the Extra Manager. Choose "ok". HyperStudio will quit, at which point you should run it again. Now click on "Ok" to run the Extra Manager.
3) A dialog box displaying a list of the currently installed Extras will appear, along with buttons to Add and Delete Extras from the list. Choose "Add", and select the Export Webpage Extra supplied in this folder.
4) Choose "Done" to exit the Extra Manager.
5) When you re-run HyperStudio, you should now find the Export Webpage Extra permanently installed in your Extras menu.
