AppleScript is a new scripting language that Apple included with System 7.5. If you don't have System 7.5 or later, then you can't use this feature.
AppleScripting works with the Finder (the "desktop") and all the things you can do from there; it also works with AppleScript aware applications. Many more applications are becoming AppleScript aware.
And, best of all, you can "write" your own AppleScripts (and launch them with FunKeys) without writing any "programming" language.
Many programs supporting recording; that is, everything you do is "recorded" into an AppleScript, and can be repeated again. To do this, find the Script Editor inside the AppleScriptâ„¢ folder, which is inside the Apple Extras Folder (either on your Hard Drive or with the CD-ROM that came with your computer). Open that, and you'll see a window pop up with three buttons on it: Record, Stop, and Run.
Click on Record, and then execute any routine action; when you have completed this action, click on the Stop button. You may then click on the Run button to confirm your action; if you like it, click on Save As... (or Save), and save your AppleScript as an Application. Then, you're done!
You can now double click on this to start it, or assign FunKeys to do it for you.
Please Be Aware that this is not the tell-all guide to AppleScript; this is just a brief introduction so you can start writing (i.e. recording) your own scripts. Also, since the code is generated from your recording, you can learn from that.
There are many, many, many thousands of AppleScript possibilities, and that is just for the Finder! You can download many free AppleScripts from the Internet (http://www.shareware.com should have some), America On-Line, etc. And there are books available on the subject.
Also, don't forget that Apple includes several AppleScripts (in the Automated Tasks folder and More Automated Tasks folder). These are also in the AppleScriptâ„¢ folder (there is an alias of them in the Apple Menu Items folder).
