-
- TO USE GREAT CANADIAN SCIENTISTS:
- ---------------------------------
- This CD works in a Macintosh or Windows computer.
-
- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
- -------------------
- MAC: 68040 or PowerPC
- Mac System 7.1 or better
- 8MB RAM (12MB RAM Recommended)
- 2X CD-ROM Drive (4X Recommended)
- 256 Color display
-
- PC: 486DX33 (486DX2/66 or higher recommended)
- Windows 3.1 (Windows 95 Recommended)
- 8MB RAM (12MB RAM Recommended)
- SoundBlaster compatible soundcard
- 2X CD-ROM Drive (4X Recommended)
- 256 color monitor and display card
-
-
- To run it on a Mac just double-click "Great Canadian Scientists".
-
- On a PC with Windows 3.1 or greater use the Run... command to run the
- file GCS_16.exe on your CD-ROM drive.
-
- For Windows 95, open your CD-ROM drive window and double click
- GCS_32
-
- When the program begins, you will be asked for your name. The computer
- will then ask you to save a file of that name to your hard drive. You
- will see the standard "Save" window and at that time you must select a
- hard drive on which to save the file. You cannot save a file to the
- CD-ROM drive (D: or E: for example). You must change drives and save
- the file on a hard-drive (usually the C: drive.) Mac users can save to
- the desktop or any hard-drive.
-
- Use the Player Record Viewer program to select a player's file
- and note the scores in various parts of GCS.
-
-
- TROUBLESHOOTING
- ---------------
- *The GCS program requires QuickTime to run. If your computer does not
- have QuickTime, the GCS program will help you install it by switching
- to the appropriate QuickTime installer which will install QuickTime
- files for your computer from the CD. Afterwards you may have to
- restart your computer. Then run Great Canadian Scientists again.
-
- *If the screen goes black after it says "loading" try quiting and
- check that you have Quicktime 2.1.1 installed on your PC. If not, you
- can install it manually from the QT_INST directory on the CD-ROM (or
- for Mac users, from the QuickTime Installer folder).
-
- *If the first screens come up black but sound is playing, quit GCS and
- set your monitor to "256 colors--high color", then run GCS again.
-
- *The program may not work well in "millions of colours". Set your
- monitor to "256 colours" or preferably "thousands of colours".
-
- *If nothing happens when you insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive and
- you cannot see the CD when you go to the proper volume (D: or E:) then
- check that your CD-ROM drivers are properly installed and booting up
- during restart.
-
- *Do not copy the "Great Canadian Scientists" program to your hard disk.
- It will not run. If you need to run it from your hard disk, make an
- alias of the program on a Mac, a program group in Win3.1 or a shortcut
- in Windows 95.
-
- *If you have problems running GCS on a Mac, try it with Virtual Memory
- off. If you are low on memory try using extension manager to turn off
- all extensions and control pannels except for Apple CD-ROM and
- Quicktime. That's all you really need.
-
- *For best appearance you should have the Helvetica font (for Macs) in
- the font folder in the System folder and Arial font (for PCs) in your
- \Windows\System directory. Most PCs and Macs have these fonts already.
- If text appears cut off or badly spaced, try re-installing these fonts
- from the original systems disks that came with your computer.
-
- NOTES:
- ------------
- *Your score is shown by clicking in the upper left of the screen.
-
- *You can stop any animation or video with a mouseclick.
-
- *Hitting any key during the start-up splash or the ending credits
- stops them.
-
- *Pop-Quizes can come at random. Don't be surprised. Follow the
- directions.
-
- *Sound volume, quiz frequency and difficulty levels can be changed in
- Prefs. Click on Prefs in the upper right of the screen.
-
- *The Quiz is meant to be a random pop quiz, not keyed to what you are
- doing at the time. If you take the hint, you arrive at the scientist
- screen where you can find the answer. Look hard, take your time. Click
- on things. The next time you hit the quiz button or if it comes
- randomly, you get a second chance to answer the question.
-
- *You will see any given quiz question at random up to three times if
- you do not answer it correctly. When the quiz says you have two more
- chances, that means you may randomly see that question two more times
- and you have two more chances to get it right. The more tries you
- take, the lower your score. After the third try, if you still get it
- wrong, you are finally given the correct answer.
-
- *Certain games are easier at the lower difficulty levels which you
- select when you first start up.
-
- *The background music for each scientist is a rendition of something
- chosen by the scientist. Here are their choices:
-
- Donald Coxeter: Bruchner 9th Symphony, 3rd movement.
- Roger Daley: Handel's Water Music
- Birute Galdikas: Dayak folk music from Borneo
- Gerhard Herzberg: Mozart Quartet for flute, violin, viola, and cello
- Doreen Kimura: Variation on a theme by the Rolling Stones
- Julia Levy: Vivaldi Flute Concerto
- John Polanyi: Tchaikovsky Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy from Snow White
- William Ricker: Bach Brandenburg Concerto
- Endel Tulving: Dvorak New World Symphony
- Irene Uchida: Beethoven Violin Concerto
-
- *The Info button yields different information depending on where you
- are. On the main screen it displays the credits. On a scientist screen it
- gives you a lot of biographical information about that scientist. On
- the reference screen (book) it gives you a bibliography of sources for
- more Canadian science. On a game screen it gives you tips on how to
- play the game or it explains the science of the game.
-
- *All the text in the yellow info boxes can be copied to the clipboard.
- You must then quit Great Canadian Scientists and go to a word
- processing program and select "Paste".
-
- *After many people use the GCS CD there will be a separate file for
- everyone who tried it. You can use the Player Record Viewer
- application on the CD to look at these files to see what parts of the
- CD got the most use and to compare how differenct users scored.
-
- *You can use the Kimura game or the Tulving game to do a class
- experiment. Have as many people as possible play the game. Then use
- the Player Record Viewer to record the scores. Do females get better
- scores than males on average in the Kimura game? What about the
- Tulving Memory game?
