MICROSOFT MOUSE README.DOC
This document contains information that supplements the
"Microsoft Mouse User's Guide".
MICROSOFT MOUSE SOFTWARE NOTES
Use of MS-DOS APPEND during Mouse installation:
MSETUP may not work properly if you've used the MS-DOS APPEND command. If
APPEND is in effect then remove it by typing APPEND; at the DOS command line
(include the semicolon).
Microsoft Mouse Drivers -- Older Versions:
MSETUP will delete any line containing "CPANEL" in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file
(unless the line starts with "SET," "PATH," or "REM").
Single-drive PCs:
If you have a single-drive PC without a hard disk, you will not be able to
use the Mouse Setup program (MSETUP) to set up the mouse software.
On a single-drive PC, you must install the mouse driver yourself. Copy MOUSE.
COM onto the disk you use to start your computer. You can then load the mouse
driver manually each time you start your system, by typing "mouse" at the DOS
prompt, or you can insert the "mouse" command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to
load the mouse driver automatically every time the system starts up.
Loading the mouse driver automatically at system startup:
MSETUP installs the mouse driver, MOUSE.COM. At your option, it will also
modify your AUTOEXEC.BAT file so the mouse driver will load automatically
every time you start your system. MSETUP will also insert comments (lines
that begin with REM) in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to illustrate how the mouse
utility SETSPEED.EXE can be invoked automatically as well. See your "
Microsoft Mouse User's Guide" for a discussion of SETSPEED.EXE.
Using the new Mouse software with Microsoft Windows:
To use your new Mouse driver software, including the acceleration
characteristics, with Microsoft Windows, replace the MOUSE.DRV file on the
backup copy of your Windows Setup disk with the MOUSE.DRV file located on
the Utility or Setup disk in your Microsoft Mouse package, make a backup copy
of your WIN.INI file and rerun Windows Setup. For more information on installing
Microsoft Windows, see the "Microsoft Windows User's Guide."
Although harmless, CPANEL.COM does not operate correctly under Microsoft
Windows.
OS/2 mouse driver:
This release includes two Microsoft OS/2 Mouse driver programs, one for OS/2
version 1.1 and one for OS/2 version 1.2.
OS2MOUSE.V11 is the driver for OS/2 version 1.1.
OS2MOUSE.V12 is the driver for OS/2 version 1.2.
Installation of the OS/2 mouse driver is done manually. That is, you must
copy the appropriate driver to a directory of your choice then modify your
OS/2 system configuration file, CONFIG.SYS, to include a reference to the
driver.
Sample OS/2 installation:
Assume your device drivers are in the directory C:\OS2. First, copy
OS2MOUSE.V11 or OS2MOUSE.V12 to that directory. Next, edit your CONFIG.SYS
file to remove the line that references your current mouse driver. The
specific contents of that line vary according to the type of mouse you have.
An example of the line to be removed follows:
DEVICE=C:\OS2\IBMMOU1.SYS (remove the line like this from CONFIG.SYS)
Next, if you are using OS/2 version 1.2, you must also remove the line that
references MOUSE.SYS from your CONFIG.SYS file. A sample of such a line
follows:
DEVICE=C:\OS2\MOUSE.SYS TYPE=MSSER$ (remove this line for OS/2 1.2)
Finally, insert one of the following lines in the CONFIG.SYS file
DEVICE=C:\OS2\OS2MOUSE.V11 (insert this line for OS/2 1.1)
or
DEVICE=C:\OS2\OS2MOUSE.V12 (insert this line for OS/2 1.2)
Note that the Microsoft OS2 mouse drivers will work with either type of
Microsoft Mouse, InPort or Serial-PS/2. You do not need separate drivers for
the different types of mice.
