DATE: Sunday, December 7, 1941
TIME: 8:30 A.M.
SERVICE: U.S.A.A.F.
AIRCRAFT: Curtiss P-40B Warhawk
ARMAMENT: 2 x .50 Cal Machine Guns, 4 x .30 Cal Machine Guns
HISTORY:
The attack on Wheeler Field cought most of the P-40 and P-36 fighters of
the 7th Fighter Command on the ground. Six pilots, however, managed to
get their planes into the air. Overwhelmingly outnumbered, they scored
the first American victories of the war, shooting down 12 enemy planes.
MISSION:
Accompany 2nd lieutenants George Welch and Ken Taylor over Ewa Marine
Corps Air Station. Land at any friendly air base to be refueled and
rearmed. (George Welch and Ken Taylor each shot down at least four
enemy planes, and were among the first USAAF aces of the war.)
